32 weeks and too much amniotic fluid - polyhydramnios......

Had a scan and antenatal appointment yesterday and have been told that my waters have increased again and are now at 99th centile and I have an AFI of 26cms, which means I have polyhydramnios.

I am going to come clean and admit I googled it - I know, I know! - and am now close to tears and feeling very worried.

They are doing a full blood count, glucose test and TORCH screen to see if there could be any reason for it i.e. diabetes, infection etc and I am going back in 3 weeks for another scan, so they are really being very thorough, but I am just so frightened.

I wanted a homebirth, which is VERY unlikely now and feel as though everything is going wrong and that there is something wrong with my baby.

Anyone had any experience of this and, if so, did you go into labour early or end up with a c section?

Thanks....

hiya,

I had this with my last 2, first time, was induced at 38+2, (also had oc aswell) and water break had to be very managed.

Doc and 2 mw's present, doc observed, whilst mw #1 held baby in place so she didn't move down with the fluid, mw#2 broke waters and stemmed, and let waters out literally by holding her hand over and moving it out of the way a bit by bit.Bless her, she was sitting on bed and was soaked!!

2nd time, went into laBOUR 17 DAYS EARLY (whoops sorry) ctx first and waters broke during an exam so again, stemmed by mw.

worry is waters go first cord could prolapse, if they do go, get onto all 4's and call for help.

hth. x

no reason either time, quite large babies, 8lb 12 at 38wks, and 9lb 5 at 17 days early.

all testing showed nothing wrong, didn't have sections, both natural births.

nothing wrong with babies either. I'm sure you'll be fine.

wontbepreggersagain · 29/07/2008 13:04

sorry- got to rush out- but- a word of advice, if a nice young doictor decides to break your waters in a managed way, first ensure he is not wearing expensive italian suede shoes he will NEVER forget or forgive!!

i have always had ph, but always had natural births with managed water breaks.

Search on MN. I don't remember any scary threads.

Had a controlled break and natural birth myself

Thanks everyone. Just feel very anxious - not the first problem with this pregnancy so feel a bit "what next?" sort of thing.

I had this with both DC's - wasn't given any tests or anything with either of them...

DS - waters broke at 36+5. Ended up with emergency section as didn't go into labour, even with drip and gel.

DD - measured 48 cms at 36 weeks planned section as my consultant was worried about scar rupture.

Don't Google! I worried myself sick as well. Both DC's perfect healthwise.

Good luck!

I'm in a similar situation, becaroo. I had a second growth scan today and was told my fluid had gone from 25.7 to 29.6. I'm 35 weeks pregnant. I've had the torch test and GTT test but all clear there. I'm seeing the consultant on Tuesday for a more detailed scan and am worried that they'll find something awful. They are also rechecking the GTT as the baby is large with an abdominal circumference out of the normal range. I wanted a water birth in the midwife led unit so that is off the cards now, but ultimately just want the baby to be here and be ok. Trying to keep calm and positive about it all.
Keep me posted as to how you get on.
Nicola

Hi Nicola, sorry to hear you are having such a worrying time.

My blood results arent back yet, so dont know re: diabetes or infection etc.

Just got back from my midwife appointment actually - what a total waste of time!!

And hour waiting in an un-airconditioned waiting room to be in and out in about 3 mins;

I told her about the polyhydramnios and the bloods and that I was anxious about the results. She said; "I cant ring them now I am too behind in clinic" (Bec thinks; I know you are, I've just sat waiting to see you for an hour!)

I had to tell her what a TORCH screen was! She didnt know!

She told me that I am measuring right for dates which really surprised me as I have been told the baby is above average size and my AFI is 26.

How can that be right?

I have got another scan on 18th - seems a long way away!

Do let me know how you get on on tuesday x

I was also diagnosed with polyhydramnios at 32 weeks. infact it was so bad the afi was off the scale at 32cms. I was told i would prob not make it past 36 weeks and to expect my waters to go. well, i was scanned every 2 weeks and monitored twice a week. I was amazed to see that at each scan the fluid levels were decreasing and the polyhydramnios just cleared itself up! I then had a period of static growth but this also corrected itself and i delivered a perfect baby girl at 40+5 weighing a healthy 7lb 10oz. she was also born in the caul so my waters never broke!

mydisguise · 31/07/2008 16:05

forgot to say i had TORCH screen and GTT and both were fine. we never found out why i developed the polyhydramnios or why it just cleared up

becaroo · 31/07/2008 16:07

Thanks mydisguise...lets hope that happens for me and Nicola!

Thanks for letting us have your experience mydisguise.
Becaroo, can you ring your midwife out of hours and ask her then to get hold of your results and ring you back? Surely she can't expect you to wait until the next appt. This is important info you need to know.
merrywell - how did your scan and gtt go?
I suppose we just have to stay calm and positive. I tell you something though, I'm sick of people asking me if it's twins!

ornelajermaine · 10/03/2010 09:26
