Is it true that you can't have any eggs that are at all runny during pregnancy? Really, really fancy fried egg on toast for lunch. Humph.

I want a runny poached egg on toast.

Unfortuinately it is true - risk of catching slmonella I think? You can have them if they're cooked through but they're just not the same are they

Make sure your dh is primed to fill the fridge with: eggs, pate, prawns, brie etc for when you get home from hospital (my dh did that when I got home with dd - best present I ever had!)

babyignoramus · 27/07/2008 10:40

I've been told I can have prawns as long as they're cooked to death - luckily not a fan of pate or soft cheeses though.

Surely if you buy eggs from vaccinated hens...? Just clutching at straws I think. Dang it.

Well have one - I did through both preganancys and the boys are fine

I didnt know you wernt allowed them

TheMadHouse · 27/07/2008 11:02

I thought it was only uncooked egg - ie fresh mayo

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 27/07/2008 11:04

Wash the eggs before cracking the shell and buy lion mark eggs - then you have about a 0.00001% chance of getting salmonella. I tried to have them hard for a while but gave up and now I eat lovely runny eggs when I feel like it. I just think you can be toooo careful, IYSWIM?

Pontypine · 27/07/2008 11:04

I lived on fried egg on totast when first pregnant - and friend egg and bacon sandwiches - they are ok as long as you make sure the yolk is hard!

BlueJellie · 27/07/2008 11:05

I can't wait to eat peanuts again, asthma runs in family on both sides so is a complete no no for me while preggers. So hard tho I love dry roasted, will binge when I get home from hospital lol!

Since egg on toast is the only thing that doesn't send my blood sugar rocketing in the morning, I have a runny one every morning.

I think it's frankly stupid to classify them as a salmonella risk still, given that lionmarked eggs have been vaccinated against it.

Alexa808 · 27/07/2008 11:33

*kat8 said what I forgot to add. Look for the little stamp: lion mark. Bon appetit!

Lion mark eggs should be fine but if the worst happened it wouldn't harm the baby at all (unlike listeria & toxoplasmosis)although it would make you feel pretty ill.

fedupandisolated · 27/07/2008 12:36

We've had postings here before about this. Think the overwhelming advice was "go and make that nice runny egg on toast and enjoy"

As others have said - look for the lionmark.

notcitrus · 27/07/2008 13:52

I think the advice against runny eggs dates from before they vaccinated the hens.

My GPs basically said just to avoid liver and any dodgy salad bars or underheated food that might give me food poisoning, because you don't want to feel more grim when pregnant and they can't give you the best antibiotics, so you'll feel grim for longer. I figure the protein has to be more important!

fledtoscotland · 27/07/2008 20:02

have a runny egg! just make sure that the eggs are fresh and have the lion stamp.

I ate the "right" food with DS1 and just got fed up with wanting stuff i wasnt allowed. This time with DS2 i have eaten what i want (making sure that it was fresh and from a reputable place) and the only time i have been ill was when I gave myself food poisoning from cheese on toast.

Enjoy your egg!

meep · 27/07/2008 20:29

you've just made my evening! Runny poached eggs on toast for me (why did nobody tell methis when I was pregnant with dd?!!)

bikerunski · 28/07/2008 08:19

Kazbeth and BlueJellie Oh yes, peanuts! I love peanuts and had toast and peanut butter for breakfast everyday for about 30 years before I was P~G. 7 weeks to go now, but then there is BFing. I'll be celebrating with a peanut butter and jam sandwhich asap, but that might be months!

As for runny eggs - I have been eating them. If I have been cooking them at home I have been at leats making the effort to flip them over for a few seconds, but still leaving them a bit runny. Almost as good for breakfast as peanut butter on toast!

HappyNewMum2Be · 28/07/2008 09:44

The yolk will still be cooked and fine, as long as the egg white is cooked, as you are cooking, splash (carefully) some of the fat over the top off the yolk, it shouldn't turn it hard, and will cook the white, so it should be as pleasurable and delicious as normal. If you have been to America, you will know they hardly cook their eggs at all compared to our greasy spoon lot.

Shitehawk · 28/07/2008 09:51

How many times have you had salmonella poisoning from eggs before you became pregnant?

I'm willing to bet that you never have.

Do you think that it's more likely to happen just because you're pregnant? Because it's not.

Go and have your fried egg

babyignoramus · 28/07/2008 13:09

Thankyouthankyouthankyou.... know what I'm having for dinner tonight!!

Minniethemoocher · 28/07/2008 18:27

Sorry, but please don't wash eggs - the egg shells are porous and if there is any chicken poo or nasties on the shell, you will just wash them into the egg -

I keep my own chickens, they are all salmonella vaccinated, and I have been enjoying eating "runny" eggs on toast.

BlueJellie · 28/07/2008 19:04

Kazbeth and Bikerunski, are peanuts a no no when breastfeeding as well?? You've just crushed my dreams! TBH I've been that caught up reading on the do's and don't of food in pregnancy I didn't think of breastfeeding - do all the same rules apply? I know alcohol etc is a no no but thats about as extensive as my knowledge gets!
