hi there, would love to know if anyone has managed to find a pushchair for a newborn that truly is all terrain, as i would like to keep myself sane by still having my nice countryside walks with my dogs after baby has arrived? so far i am wondering about mountain buggy which seema expensive for what it includes,or mothercares urban detour which i worry might not be that good off road?

niki at the mothercare person!

obviously not a dog owner either, prat

our mb got its 1st outing with pooch when dd was 5days...altho i really regretted it, thought my pelvic floor was gone for good...

notasheep · 25/07/2008 21:09

niki-I dont know! its the one with the standard size wheel-didnt get the carry cot.
AND the front wheel comes off and i can get the jogger in the back of my VW Golf without putting any seat down
We have walked hundreds of miles with dd then ds in it,it was actually a hand me down and has gone through 5 children

notasheep · 25/07/2008 21:15

Niki-I have just checked the web site-the ones with swivel wheels look a waste of time!
I have the Performance series one but i am sure the front wheel isnt so big.

kiskidee · 25/07/2008 21:19

this imho.

We have a Mountain Buggy Terrain which is suitable from birth. It is great for mud, sand and snow and can carry a snow board (not sure if this is recommended though). Theoretically I also use it to go running with DD, but I am a bit of a lightweight. I can't blame that on the MB though. We have a fixed wheel, which I think makes it more suitable for really bumpy ground. You can fix the wheel on the MB Urban though. I don't know in practice how bumpy the ground has to be for a MB Terrain to be better - maybe off piste down hill freestyle buggy boarding? .

We also have an Ergo sling, which beats any buggy hands down if you are really going off road. We had a backpack for a while too, but the Ergo has a much more comfortable carrying position. However, I have to say that for little babies, I have found the Baby Bjorn sling the easiest to use, but they don't last very long if you have a big baby (maybe 6 months). On the other hand I think you can buy them quite cheaply on e-bay. You can use a sling from birth, and there is a huge variety available. People get quite attached to their slings (pun not intended), and some almost have a cult following.

Our MB urban we used with the swivel wheel practically all the time with absolutely no problem with it weaving - if stones/rocks/ruts were more than about 4" on a regular basis, we just switched to fixed wheel (takes 5sec, and as easy to switch back.

Ds went out in pram on day 6, even though I had an emergency csec (after 34hrs!) - took a few more days before I took the dog too due to pulling (although she doesn't normally). Ds went out in all weathers!

Are there any off road buggies people would recommend more than others for off road running as well as walking on bumping ground. My baby is 3 weeks old and i'm desperate to get into Richmond Park for a nice long walk!!

I currently only have a buggy that can deal with marble shop floors and carpet..(bugaboo bee:-()just about manages bumps on pavements. I have to walk at a snails pace and take all the weight of the buggy on my shoulders as we approach any bumps e.g manhold covers, bumping paving at traffic lights.. etc.

madwomanintheattic · 07/06/2009 15:20

another chariot fan here for when a sling/ carrier isn't practical. they sell a newborn insert too. ours have done mountains, beaches and everything in between. i actually now prefer the trailer versions with a jogger kit, as the integral rain/ sun/ mozzie screens make it a zillion times easier than fannying around with a separate raincover. we only changed when they were a bit bigger though, so not sure about newborn use...
you can get a x-country ski conversion kit too lol, should you feel the need

I run with a MB urban - depends what you mean by off road...I run on riverside path, through fields, and on public footpaths etc. I don't run up hills with it, but it has been taken up hill and dale when walking etc. If you unclip the shopping basket and fix the front wheel, you can take it pretty much anywhere.

MERMAIDKB · 07/06/2009 15:40

Thanks smulttronstallet

I have been told that Mountain Buggy have gone bust and Phill and Tends have bought the company. Has anyone had a problem purchasing one. I orderd MB Swift for shopping in February and store has not been able to supply yet.. Have Also - Has anyone bought an off road buggy recently (e.g last month or so) or can anyone recommend a retailer in sw london where I can look at a several buggies on the market. Most stores generally only have a couple to choose from. Is there a baby off road buggy warehouse someone near kingston/richmond I have not come across???

mcflumpy · 07/06/2009 15:56

Hi yes we have had difficulties with MB. After much research, we settled on the MB as we thought it would suit our lifestyle best. Ordered in March, were due to pick up last month and were told that they have stopped manufacturing for the moment. supplier was confident (following correspondence from MB) that they would receive stocks in May, however that date passed an no sign of pram, latest I believe is that they will be manufaccturing again but stock may not be available until July. This is still not a certainty. We eventually opted for an Easy Walker Sky, which is very similar to the MB,cheaper, actually folds a lot better and the car seat is more secure, but as baby doesn't arrive til next week, can't give a full review of it!

Good luck, if we had the time we'd probably wait for the MB but with no guarantees of stock arriving anywhere in the UK anytime soon, was too big a risk for us.

Hi there, a Jane 3 wheeler with a carrycot to start but you can use the pushchair from birth whcih im still usung now with a 3 year old. I also had a sling and a bush baby back carrier which I used until he was 2 and a half for really muddy walks. Your babe will love it and it will do you good as well, I got over my CS really quickly doing nice long walks.

bellasmama · 08/06/2009 13:28

ps, as soon as you get your pushchair go to a bike shop and ask for the tyres to be replaced with "gloop" tyres will cost around £30 but you will never have a problem with punctures x

SweetPea99 · 08/06/2009 18:27

Hi I have just taken delivery of a Mountain buggy terrain for dog walking. Take a look at www.chariotsatp.co.uk I can't fault the service - there was a delay because of the Phil and Ted's buyout but that is all sorted now apparently.

bumpsoon · 08/06/2009 18:46

personally id get a landrover ,keep an eye out on ebay . I have one and the best thing about it was ,that i could lift it one handed over stiles or fences when out walking .Would second what others have said about slings though aswell.

Tamlin · 08/06/2009 18:50

Phil and Ted's. My neighbour's been bumping hers all over the local paddocks and along the river here for the last three years with her lab in tow, and that thing is still holding up marvellously. We've just gone out and bought one to replace our Quinny, and it's coping much better.

bozette · 08/06/2009 22:07

Hi MERMAIDKB I live in the same area as you. I used a nipper 360 for my DS from birth. I regularly go to richmond park and DH runs with it and i pretend to. We've also taken it more seriously off roadwithout probs as well as on sand, snow etc. Its fab, very light and i thouroughly recommend it. You can't run til the babys a bit older tho, to avoid shaking it too much!!

I've actually just bought a Phil and Teds Dash as well as am 34 weeks preggers and DS is still only 21 months. I was reluctantly planning to sell nipper, but am actually quite dissapointed with the P&Ts in comparison so will keep it. Its heavier and less easily manouverable (Sp?!) and i keep standing on the basket as you walk closer to it. I'll still use it for both but if i'm going somewhere more off roady will use baby bjorn and nipper.

SHOPS- A3 baby barn, google it, loads of pushchairs and fantastic advice. Avoid weekends if poss. Its in the middle of surbiton golf club. Peppermint in Kingston also great, has some fantastic deals and will match internet prices.
