Well I had a sweep yesterday thats done absolutely nothing in terms of starting labour off and was wondering whether you can get them to try again and if so whats the maximum no of sweeps that can be done?? I'll do anything to avoid my induction next Friday and as I have a mw aptmt on Monday I was wondering if I can get her to do another sweep then? And is it worth it if the 1st one did nothing? Ta muchly!

Thanks for explaining that.
Not sure that affected my labour or not.
I think you saw my "Is this typical of birth experience thread?"

I had a sweep on Friday, 11am , still nothing...Doctor said my cervix was soft and he could feel the baby's head. DOes this sound promising or does it not mean much? My experience last time was quite different - sweep at 1pm, by 5pm full established labour and 5 com dilated at 8pm when I went into the hospital.I am booked to have my waters broken on Friday. What implications does that have, does anyone know?

pupuce · 05/02/2005 18:31

Eva- That sweep probably won't work. As you are not a 1st time mum it is quite normal to have soft cervix in late pregnancy. How many weeks are you?
Having your waters broken was talked about here

Thanks pupuce, I am due on MOnday, so am 39+5. To explain, my DD2 (came 13 days late)was my first labour as DD1 was breech and a c-section. With DD2, I had to go back 3 times to even have a sweep performed (cervix posterior and closed first two times) but the third time it worked and I was in labour shortly thereafter. With only 17 months between DD2 and this one, perhaps cervix is also softer than the 2.5yrs between the first two? I have been having lots of twitches but it all goes quiet soon after. Thanks for the link.

The time betweeb your labour has nothing to do with state of cervix.
Your first was a section at 38 or 39 weeks I presume and you cervix never wenbt to work. the 2nd time your cervix did get into action so this time it will be thinner faster (once it decides to get going). It also often doesn't toatally close for a 2nd vaginal birth.
I would not expect anything to happen before 41 weeks... if it does : great ! If it doesn't then you have at least 3 days to prepare for an induction... 7 in other hospitals.

Eva3 · 05/02/2005 23:32

Hmmm... 41 weeks would take me to Feb.14th and am having my waters broken on the 11th. Do I understand you right - I should try to delay this?

pupuce · 06/02/2005 11:40

Why are you being induced before 41 weeks?

Eva3 · 06/02/2005 11:48

Good question... I have had terrible hip pain, have 2 other children, am impatient, none of which are good reasons....private hospital so they are very intervention-happy....

pupuce · 06/02/2005 11:51

hmmm.... well it is your choice.
I would not go down your route but ultimately it is your choice and your body.

Eva3 · 06/02/2005 11:53

Am still hopeful it will all happen naturally before the 11th, and I can always change my mind.

pupuce · 06/02/2005 11:53

BTW with your DD2 your sweep worked but you were 13 days overdue..... now you are not due yet!
I can't see why your baby would come early.

Eva3 · 06/02/2005 11:56

Who knows... I have had lots of twitches for a week now, both my mother and my sister went over due 11 days with first and 3 days/ 2 days respectively with no.2. With a 17-month old I am running around like mad.... am still hopeful in any case.
