Anti D

I'm getting really confused regarding having the Anti D injection. I'm O rhesus negative and this is my first pregnancy. I've been booked to go to the hospital for my Anti D injections but a number of people have now told me that they normally only give the injection during second pregnancies. I've had no bleeding during the pregnancy so I'm confused about whether I should be having this injection or not.
Any advice gratefully received.

I too am O rhesus negative and had it with my first at 20 weeks after a bleed. Have you spoken to your midwife about your concerns?

No I had it with DS - although it was a bit pointless as DH is also R Neg so no chance of anything other than R Neg baby. But they didn;t seem to take that into consideration ! I wasn't really giveen much info about it though at the time. Bit bad really

I had it with my 1st, too at 28 weeks, and had no bleeding my 1st pregnancy. I'm in America, and I think its pretty standard to give it with all pregnancys that are rh negative.

Yes, a bit like when DS was born & had blond hair. Mine is very dark & DHs is dark brown. You could hear the amazement in the midwifes voice - OO he's so blond! But me & DH both had fair hair when we were born - didn't go darker until 4 or 5. DS is 4 now & still blond but heading towards something darker. (sorry to hijack Anti D thread !)

I asked my midwife about this on Tuesday.I am RHneg & had to have a jab whilst pregnant with dd after I had bleeding.I was given another one after she was born,as she was a different blood group to me.

Apparently the jabs are offered routinely at 28 wks now-whether you have had bleeding or not.Personally,I don't like the idea of that & told my midwife.She said that the rules are constantly being changed of when & why jabs will be offered,but that if I didn't want it,I didn't have to have it.I've a few weeks to go before I'm 28 wks & of course I'd have the jab if I'd had bleeding or after the birth if needed,but don't see the pont of having it for no good reason.

with the dd's they jabbed me in the bum, this time, during pregnancy they got my arm.

Like YG, I didn't have it during 1st pg (only after birth as ds1 was Rh+ve) but did have antenatal injections during my second. Reason being that policy here had changed in the meantime, on the basis of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence guideline of 2002 which says that antenatal injections were advisable (see here ). Policy differs across the country because not all places are following this guidance.

The reason it is advised antenatally is because post natal injections fail to prevent sensitisation in a proprtion of women. Antenatal injections have been shown to reduce this proportion. Also, it reduces the risk of becoming sensitised if you have a bleed.

Thanks everyone. Feel far more reassured now I know its common to have the injection in your first pg. I have an appointment with my midwife today so I think I'll talk it through with her a bit more. I want to know all the facts before they start jabbing me with anything

I find this anti-D thing so confusing. I am Oneg and had Anti-D after dd was born as she was +ve. I though this was to protect me for subsequent prgenancies. I'm now 30 weeks pg and nothing has been mentioned with regard to giving it to me again. Presumably my blood tests show that I am not producing antibodies and, as I have had no falls or bleeds it is not necessary?
