Deeply, deeply embarrassed... and a teensy bit concerned

Have just had the most embarrassing thing happen, and am now also wondering if I should be worrying.

I've had rather (TMI, sorry), damper kniockers than normal since being pregnant, although nothing too unpleasant. However, have just stood up from my desk and walked to the toilet, and when I got there I realised that my knickers and about a 15cm patch on the back of my dress were soaking wet. Aside from the awful awful shame of having walked away from my (all male) colleagues with a massive and v obvious wet patch on my dress ( ), should I be concerned about it? Just come back to chair and it is also quite damp where fluid soaked through.

As far as I can tell, wetness was almost entirely odourless - what smell it did have wasn't unpleasant or anything - and clear.

Should I be calling the MW? Have an appointment with her on thursday anyway...

Am 31 weeks, by the way.

Can't you leave work now so that the "couple of hours" on the pad is the same as the "two hour commute home" iyswim? Then you would be near your lovely hospital, and I assume, your dp/dh.

solo · 08/07/2008 13:58

I ran in for a blood test at about 28 weeks and thought my waters had gone...turned out after being examined and scared silly by a MW that I'd wet myself...no pelvic floor control . Hope you are ok.x

Ladytophamhatt · 08/07/2008 13:59

Just say you've ahd a abit of a leak and it might be youe waters.

really there nothing to be embarrassed about.

It woudl be if you weren't PG but you are so it sjust PG sympton imo.

callmeovercautious · 08/07/2008 14:00

I agree with oranges, I would go now and get seen. If there is a problem the sooner they pick it up the better. Also if you have a 2 hour commute might be better to do it now rather than at the end of the day when you might have to stand up.

EffiePerine · 08/07/2008 14:01

I like the idea of heading off home and going to your local hospital if still leaking.

EffiePerine · 08/07/2008 14:01

and yes you don;t want to be worrying about your waters going in the rushg hour. Honestly, just go (and if all is well have a kip when you get home )

hopefully · 08/07/2008 14:10

Would any of you like to be my boss? You're all much nicer than her! I've decided that if I'm still (a) too stressed to do any work and (b) leaking in any way in about 20-30 minutes when she's back from lunch then I'll go home. If not, I'll leave it till 5 and either go to Thomas's or go home.

Have to phone DP now and tell him and the poor chap will be worried silly.

oh hopefully you poor thing! Agree you should go home - if work are mean tell them its either home or hospital (St Ts) so you're off either way.

So much fluid sounds scary for you though sure it will be fine.

I don't see how your boss can refuse you an early finish tbh. Best to go home. You will feel better, especially if it turns out you need to go to hospital.

Sunshinemummy · 08/07/2008 14:25

Hopefully the maternity A&E (it's called the Day Assessment Unit) at St Thomas's is really good. It can get busy but it's worth a visit if you're concerned.

Jenbot · 08/07/2008 18:39

Oh dear, that would be worrying, but don't be too embarrassed, weird things happen to us pregnant ladies!
Let us know how you get on this evening.

EffiePerine · 09/07/2008 07:36

Is everything OK Hopefully?

star6 · 09/07/2008 07:54

bump! been lurking here/reading and want to make sure hopefully is ok, too. Let us know

newjerseychick · 09/07/2008 08:11

Hi

I'm a bit late saying this but please double check with your midwife. TBH urine normally smalls of urine where as the amniotic fluid is non smelly. I had this at 40 weeks and my midwife just said it was nothing and all the time my waters were leaking and my poor baby was left with no water at all!

It is normal for the fluid to leak a little and it usually is the fore waters which can refill.

Axx

paperdoll · 09/07/2008 08:34

I don't want to undermine all the good advice here, because you should get it checked, but wanted to add that exactly the same thing happened to me regularly in late pregnancy - quite a lot of fluid, not urine-smelling at all, wet patches on clothes if I wasn't careful, general embarrassment. But it wasn't fluid. I got it checked twice. Nothing bad happened and my fluid levels and baby were totally fine. So it may not be anything to worry about. Good luck xx

Well, I put the pad on and didn't really get any more leakage - a teensy bit, but it was thicker and more like normal discharge. Also baby has been kicking away merrily, blissfully unaware of all the stress it's been causing me. So I spoke to MW again yesterday and she says as long as I don't get any more fluid I should be fine, and she'll give me a bit of a check over at my appointment tomorrow.

I went home a little bit early yesterday and had a nice restful evening and DP made me nice dinner and sent me to bed at 9, so am feeling a bit more positive today.

Am wearing a pad today just in case though, as am now a little paranoid! Have also written down directions to St Thomas's Day Asessement Unit just in case of future drama, so I can dash myself over there if necessary.

Thanks so much for all your support everyone, I heart MN!

Oh, it could be your hind waters?

theinsider · 09/07/2008 09:36

Glad everything's ok hopefully

chutneymary · 09/07/2008 09:37

Hopefully - so sorry you are going through this. I had the same with DD1 and spent half my life in teh Day Assessment unit at Tommy's. Knew the MWs there by name.

I'd keep a pad on for the next few days and sniff it regularly. Wee smells of wee whereas amniotic fluid smells sweet. I had a lot of very watery discharge with DD1 and was glad that I could rule out leaking waters most of the time with the sniff test.

If your waters do go early, there is a risk of premature labour and infection, so don't take any chances. And ignore the geeks - they'll be too embarrassed to say anything to an obvious pg woman about women's trouble of any sort.

Take care.

Pidge · 09/07/2008 09:37

Good news hopefully - have been thinking of you.

minniedot · 09/07/2008 10:35

Oh lovey, you poor thing.

Don't worry about the men seeing, if they did see they probably would have concerned that your waters were breaking..

Glad you had a nice eveing with your dp, he sounds lovely looking after you...

I'm sure everything will be fine and remember you and your baby are number 1!!

HappyNewMum2Be · 09/07/2008 10:35

Hi hopefully, been through this myself and it does panic you terribly. At about 20 weeks I thought I was losing water, but it turns out it was just discharge and now at about 30 weeks I am having this quite regularly and it is a mixture of discharge and being too warm - sweaty!! In fact as I logged on this morning, I stood up and realised that I was very very wet there and also under my arms, seems like my body needed to get rid of some fluids!

chutneymary is quite right about the smell test - not nice to have to do tough!

Don't worry about your colleagues, male or female either. A few years back a colleague (slightly older than most of us) had a bit of an accident at work, wasn't well, and the most sympathetic and caring of the lot were the younger guys. I think we underestimate men quite a lot of the time when it comes to this sort of thing.

Take care.

callmeovercautious · 09/07/2008 21:12

Hopefully - hope you are OK this evening. Glad it was a false alarm. I have remembered since I nagged you yesterday that when I was expecting DD 2 years ago I was 8m pg, really hot August. I was sure I was leaking fluid as I was wet all the time for a few days. MW tried hard not to laugh when she told me I was just sweating a lot in an unusual place and had additional discharge due to being heavily PG.
