Is it necessary to buy a new Moses basket mattress?

Just when I thought I was organised.....my 2nd baby is due in 2 weeks and I've had a sudden panic about the Moses basket mattress! The basket and mattress were brand new, from Mothercare when my son used them 4 years ago. I've obviously washed the fabric covering of the basket and the mattress is a wipe clean one so surely it will be ok to use for the new baby? Or not? Any advice? Thanks!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think the advice is to get a new matress with each child

it is recommended to get new mattress we had second hand moses basket so no new mattress but cot was new with safety mattress

i think you can get the safety mattresses really cheap for moses baskets but if not in it to long before going to cot i dont think it will make to much difference as i dont know how old our mattress was and ds was fine you spend most of your time staring at them anyway

I guess you can buy the mattresses separately from Mothercare? Thanks for your responses.

Yeah Mothercare i guess or i know a friend who got one from Babies r us.

i would definitely get a new mattress, lots of ways to cut the baby finances with second hand stuff, but wouldnt recommend compromising on a mattress.

babies r us

hope that helps

Ebay has lots of mattress sellers which do them to safety regs and lots of different sizes too (will even make to size). Got mine for £8 with P&P.

I was recently wondering the same thing. I went for a nursery grade foam mattress in the end. They are supposed to be more supportive than pocket sprung ones.

I reused dds cot mattress for ds. It was waterproof so could be cleaned and it had a removable washable cover that I washed.

There is less risk using a mattress between siblings than using a mattress that has come from a different family
