Thought I was going for a 1st scan but have to go to a clinic at hospital? Anyone else help!

I was told by midwife I would get a letter through for a scan. Yesterday I got a letter from hospital for 'dating and clinic'at an antenatal clinic.

I am guessing this means a dating scan, but the letter is not clear. It says I have to see a consultant after a scan.

The midwife did not say anything about this, just that I would go for a scan.

Anyone help!? I phoned the hospital but can't get an answer.

Sometimes they just send out standard letters for these things. Mine said I had to see a consultant or registrar after my scan - but I didn't. Why don't you call your midwife and check with her ?

JacobsPrincess · 07/07/2008 14:12

In some areas you are automatically put under a consultant and seeing you straight after the dating scan is a good time for intitial consultation. Don't panic!

My scan said dating and clinic, but when I called to clarify, it turns out the letter sent was a template used for everyone whether you had an appt with a Consultant or not.

Are you diabetic, over/under weight, have other existing medical issues? These things sometimes automatically flag up for consultant led care.

I did have a c section last time so wondered if this was why.

No other health problems

If you have a section IME then you automatically come under a consultants care and they try to do scans and clinics on same day.

I had an appt with a consultant after my 20wk scan but I saw a registrar in the end - entirely routine - it went along the lines of:
Reg: "Everything is OK with your bloods and scan, any questions?"
Me: "No"
Reg: "OK then, off you go"

And I never saw another doctor until dd's post natal check prior to release from hospital.

You'll probably have yor scan and then see the consultant who will go over your notes so far for this pregnancy, have a quick look at your scan and then previous birth notes.

If all is ok then they'll stick you back into the community and you wont see the consultant again.

at my 12 week scan, I saw a consultant afterward. It was straightforward and she did a blood test (something to do with a "combined" test with the nuchal fold and I got to choose whether or not to have it). We asked her if she could explain the numbers from the nuchal fold measurements, but the midwife said she didn't know how to read that data (funny that... the sonographer told us to ask her if we had questions!!)
At the 21 week scan, there was no consultant afterward... felt a bit weird, but I guess that's the way it's done there... I think it's different everywhere from what I understand.

Maybe it is because of section then. I had an emergency one with ds as he was in diagnosed breech and I had high bp.

Feel better now knowing others have been through this lol!

I haven't had any bloods taken yet and I am 10 weeks. Do you think this will be done at hospital?

MissusH · 07/07/2008 14:30

the high BP & emergency cs would put you under consultant care so they scan & do 12wk appt at the the same time. They should also take your bloods while they are at it.

I am 28wks & under consultant care (high bmi ) so had 12wk booking appt, then a 16wk appt where I turned down the triple test. I don't go back until 34wks so all remaining appts have been with my community midwife at the gps surgery.

lulumama · 07/07/2008 14:33

don;t worry ! you'll have your scan and an appointment afterwards... prob have your bloods done etc...

congratulations BTW

due to previous c.s you will automatically be deemed high risk, and offered consultant led care. which you can decline, should you choose to

PrettyCandles · 07/07/2008 14:34

I had this with all my pgs. First scan, then go downstairs to a-n clinic for booking-in and all the bloods, measurments, etc.

I wouldn't worry.

Thanks ladies! Feeling better now. Think I will just take the appt as it comes! Looking forward to it in a way, to get the ball rolling.
