Is a crib necessary, can you do with just a cot?

Hi wasn't sure where to put this. People have moses baskets as take to other peoples houses and carry them about. With cribs is it necessary to have one, can you use a cot straight away in your bedroom, but obviously they stay in your bedroom. Thinking budget wise, do you have to have a crib can you just use a cot if youv'e got one. Advice needed

Cots are suitable from newborn, alwasy put baby to sleep on back and feet to foot of cot

merryandmad · 06/07/2008 13:56

Some people cannot fit a full size cot in the parent's bedroom (esp if its a cot bed), so go for a crib as a stop gap in between moses and cot.
Go for what evers easiest/cheapest/works for your life
But I second scorpio, alwats put babies at the bottom of the cot so they can't wriggle down underneath the blankets and always on their back

merryandmad · 06/07/2008 13:56

that should be always - sorry

Dd1 slept in a large drawer for a few days (on the floor - I should add!) then we turned the drawer over and put a carrycot on it. Then she slept in with us. We had bought a cot but it was in another room and I didn't like the thought of her being so far away!

Don't be enticed into spending money. There is no need for about three-quarters of the stuff in baby catalogues. You sound wise already. Keep it up!

what is the difference between a moses basket and a crib? Am I being thick?

Moses basket v handy for having the baby asleep anywhere, and warm, and cosy, and in a bed environment..... out to dinner parties etc... or just any room in the house when you are busy doing stuff.

I put both ours in own room from 3mths, and so for the short amount of time, if you are not going to have the baby sleeping any old place and will instead be sticking to strict designated bedroom routine, then I really would not waste the money.

littlelamb · 06/07/2008 14:09

I got a moses basket this time round and wish I hadn't bothered. Ds is very long and is much happier in his cot, so moses basket is now gatring dust at just 4 weeks after the birth. He does have a pram with a good sized carrycot though, it didn't occur to me that I could just use this instead (I blame the pregnant brain)

scorpio1 · 06/07/2008 14:09

Moses basket is the wicker basket

a crib is a small cot - look on mothercare

bergentulip · 06/07/2008 14:11

well, why the bleep would 'one' need a small cot?

Moses basket then to cot, can't see the need, in all honesty, for a crib- at all.

daisy26 · 06/07/2008 14:12

aaah cool-well we have a cot and it will fit in our room, and it's just a cot,all we need to buy is a mattress then. Wwe are just going to stick with the cot then. Thankyou

We just used the carrycot part of the pram downstairs, and a cot in our room upstairs.

VictorianSqualor · 06/07/2008 14:28

I only have a cot, no moses basket, no crib nothing.
We don't even use DS2's chair, he is either on my lap, in his cot, or on his playmat.

tinkspregnantwithnumber2 · 06/07/2008 14:31

we had a moses basket for dd1 found it great.
fit perfectly next to our bed for when she was in our room @ night, we wouldnt beable to fit a cot next to bed.
also used moses downstairs on stand for when she was sleeping in the day
the moses we bought was from mothercare came with everything you needed e.g blanket, sheet, matress etc.
dd1 had a cot bed so bigger than a cot.
babies r meant to feel more secure in a moses 1st too. they look so small in a cot

fledtoscotland · 06/07/2008 14:51

a moses basket and cot are fine but we found DS hated his moses basket and it was resigned to the loft within the first week and as our room isnt big enough for a full size cot, we ended up with a crib which he was fine in.

just go with whatever suits your circumstances and enjoy it

daisy26 · 06/07/2008 15:50

i suppose at first ill see how she settles, if necessary put her wherever she settles more, and if need to get a crib then maybe get one. Saying that my friend has one she maybe giving us, but we wanna get things sorted, stuff brought now, i ave 6wks to go, yeh still a few weeks away, but wanna be prepared

We had a moses basket that they used til I couldn't shoehorn them in any more, then straight onto a futon on the floor. Never had a cot at all.

bergentulip · 06/07/2008 15:59

6weeks is not actually that long to go.

I thought that myself, and 2weeks later gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy...... I'd have everything ready for a month before if you don't wanna get caught out- unlikely, but possible

So, you just sound well-prepared to me!

juuule · 06/07/2008 16:19

We never had a crib. We had a moses basket which we put into the cot in the early days (months). It meant that we could keep the baby downstairs with us until we were going to bed and then just carry her up with us without disturbing her.

JulesJules · 06/07/2008 16:29

We never had a Moses basket (if you get one, it is not safe to carry around with the baby in it) I think you could manage without a crib unless you don't have space for the cot in your room. Tbh, both dds slept mostly in our bed, we could probably have managed without the cot as well.

nappyaddict · 06/07/2008 16:31

my friend did the opposite. she had a crib and then at 4 months her baby went straight into a bed (not a divan bed which is high though) with a guard on.

juuule · 06/07/2008 16:33

Why aren't moses baskets safe to carry around with a baby in?

JackieNo · 06/07/2008 16:41

We just had a cot in our room, and both DD and DS had naps downstairs in the pram carrycot, for the first few weeks.

MuffinMclay · 06/07/2008 16:42

Just a cot here with grobags (avoids the wriggling under blankets problem).

MummyLovesPrams · 06/07/2008 16:44

We bought this crib for DD 2 years ago & it was fab.

We are using it again this time for our Little Man - although with a new mattress.

We have a cot too but find it takes up huge amounts of in our room.

This crib is fab, it's compact enough to fit nicely in our room without taking up masses of space & our DD could have stayed in past the 6 months that she was in it.

We also have a family crib (as in one that has been passed down through the family) that we keep downstairs & use during the day to save us lugging anything up/down the stairs

re: moses basketswww.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1121663
My friend had an accident with hers when one of the handles broke and her baby fell out, fortunately he was OK. The doctor said he had seen quite a few babies following accidents to do with moses baskets and he thought the handles should be regarded as just decorative.

juuule · 06/07/2008 17:26

But surely people wouldn't put their trust in the handles alone. We always checked the handles and usually supported the base with a hand under the basket where the baby lay.

Definitely liked the convenience of being able to move baby from downstairs to upstairs without disturbing if asleep.
