Upper abdominal pain - 29 weeks

I've been having pain right across the top of my abdomen, at the top of where the baby is sitting nearly all day, not when I'm sat down, just when I'm walking around, even light house work. I've had a quick search and I can't really see anything other than it pointing to pre-eclampsia, which I doubt as I have no other symptoms, in fact I feel really well apart from being a little tired.

I was thinking it could be constipation or possibly heartburn, but I don't have any acid indigestion etc. I thought constipation would be discomfort more down below. Has anyone else had this pain? Or any ideas. I don't want to be calling the doctor or midwife if it's something I can leave till tomorrow.

Thanks guys

Call the doctor or midwife. Probably nothing, or just the way the baby is sat, but I had this kind of pain at 29 weeks with absolutely no other symptoms, no high bp, no protein in urine, and it was pre-eclampsia.

Incidently I also thought it was wind, constipation, heartburn etc - in fact in the DAU they actually diagnosed it as heartburn (despite the fact I had no burning) and only realised I had PE when the blood tests came back.

Do hope it is nothing, but always best to check. If you are worried and feel the mw is fobbing you off, request a blood test. Good luck!

I only had bloods taken last wed for iron etc. Will pre-eclampsia show up on that test if present or will it need doing separately?

You need specific blood tests done for liver function and other things I've forgotten, I don't think they do them unless you have symptoms.

Ditto LiegeAndLief- I had the same pain you described at 29 weeks, thinking exactly the same- heartburn/wind etc.- and no other symptoms of PE. Over the course of a week it worsened terribly and we went to A&E. By then I had severe PE (HELLP syndrome), my liver was shutting down, although my blood pressure didn't really start to rise until very late on. PE manifests itself in many different ways, not always through the classic combination of high BP & protein in urine.

Definitely get checked out by your midwife/GP/hospital day assessment unit. PE can worsen very rapidly. Hoping it's nothing more than ligaments stretching. Good luck xx

disneystar- PE is pre-eclampsia, a good website with lots of info is: www.preeclampsia.org/

Uusually high BP refers to the second/borrom figure (diastolic pressure), and officially "high" is considered to be anything over 90- although if you started off with low blood pressure, e.g. diastolic of 60, a rise of 20 or more points over a pregnancy would be cause for concern.

Some of your symptoms do sound a bit PE-like but it's good that your BP is still normal and no protein in your urine. However like I said sometimes, quite rarely, women develop PE differently and BP and protein in urine happen later, often not until after birth. I would definitely speak to your doctors about your concerns, especially the pain and the swelling (although swelling can be a symptom of PE it is also very common at the later stages of pregnancy due to water retention).

Good luck for your induction and I hope everything goes well! xx

PS. As far as I know pre-existing liver problems aren't linked with PE or HELLP symdrome. Liver probs develop in HELLP syndrome because of the breakdown of the breakdown of blood cells putting too much strain on the liver- this is orginally caused by a clotting problem in the placenta.

Disneystar, pain at the top of your stomach, headaches and swollen hands/feet are all symptoms of pre-eclampsia (PE). For bp they are normally more worried about the bottom number, especially if it goes over 90, but also look for rises compared to what it normally is. I would ring your mw or doctor and let them know about your symptoms even if you are meant to be going in tomorrow as PE can get worse very quickly so it is always best to get checked out. Good luck!
