Grossly swollen ankles and feet - is it something bad?

I'm 18 weeks and I have had this since 16 weeks and it's getting worse. Last time I had blood pressure and wee checked was a fortnight ago and it was ok. Have I got this for the rest of my pregnancy now??

Contact midwife, you need bp and wee checking again as it's started since they were last checked. A bit early for pre-eclampsia but you need it checking out.

Def agree that you should get it checked out. My blood pressure is fine and my mw always asks about swelling - when I start moaning about my giant cankles she just smiles and blames the weather!

pregnancy1 · 01/07/2008 15:58

Bloody jelly brain. I meant to say - get it checked out, but it may just be one of those things. Swelling is v common in pregnancy so if your mw confirms your bp is fine, don't worry.... you can join the rest of us that haven't seen our ankle bones for weeks!

Well, the obstetrician just mumbled something about all sorts of unpleasant symptoms can arise between 16 and 22 weeks due to hormone surges, and didn't seem too fussed. However, back then I had only had one bout of it. Now it's every sodding day. I am not really expecting my bp to be high - if it was I'd be dead worried, because I have in fact had low bp all my life, even whilst pregnant (or up to the last time it was taken anyhoo).

don't worry too much - it could be the warm weather - I have this too.

Minniethemoocher · 01/07/2008 16:44

I have swollen feet, hands and ankles, I have just had my ante-natal appointment and everything is fine, I think that it must just be the hot weather, off to soak my tootsies in a bowl of cool water!

jette · 01/07/2008 16:58

I also have giant elephant cankles - I really hope its just the weather

LadyThompson · 01/07/2008 17:00

Mine are more like thankles.

I am going to end up with stretchmarks round them at this rate. DP says he doesn't care, as long as I don't get them round my mouth

Mine are very swollen.
As a diabetic my blood pressure, weight, urine, everything gets checked either weekly or fortnightly. I was checked yesterday.
So I just assumed that it is one of those things.
I barely have any ankles to talk of when not pregnant, to be honest.

gillythekid · 02/07/2008 08:25

I have trotters where my feet used to be.

LadyThompson · 02/07/2008 14:19

Boots' own Reviving Foot Spray is quite good. Doesn't relieve the swelling - it just feels nice, smells nice and is cheap.

I had huge feet, ankles and hands and didn't have any problems with pre-eclampsia etc etc. They are still a little swollen now almost 5 weeks after giving birth.

LadyThompson · 03/07/2008 11:12

Oh gosh, poor you. Great it wasn't pre-eclampsia though, that is reassuring. But sad I won't be in my Christian Louboutins anytime soon (I should add I only have one pair and they are for super best, but still).

I had such swollen feet and ankles in ds's pregnancy that I couldn't walk , and it was worse in the last month, in January, when it was freezing.
But they kept telling me not to worry.
It doesn't always mean something is wrong, I don't think.

gillythekid · 03/07/2008 13:36

My DH has taken a pic of the 'monster trotters', he then zooms in, shows it to friends and colleagues and plays 'guess the limb'!! Good job I have a sense of humour.

LOL Gilly
