Aminosentisis worry

I'm looking for a bit of advice please.

My result came back from the 'Self Screening Test' ( the 14 week scan that you get at the hospital ).

A doctor called me today from the hospital and said that he had the results. It was 1?244 (which was below the cut off point of 250). He said 1?244 my baby was likely NOT to have down syndrome.

It is 0.4% of not having down's. But for example, he said some people see might see a 5% as a high risk!

I wasn't wanting to get the aminosentisis test done and risk having a miscarriage. But on the other hand I would be worried if the baby does have a problem when it's born?

What do you think I should do, I have to call the hospital tomorrow to let them know if I was the aminosentisis test.

I had a risk of 1 in 140 and went for the test. We already have a DD and I wanted to know what I was dealing with.

The risk of miscarriage depends on the centre where you have the test and who is doing it - in my case it was 1 in 300 but having had counselling beforehand it transpired that the unfortunate 1 in 300 tended to be babies that were very sick already and probably would have died in utero anyway. Which was reassuring in some ways.

You should have counselling before making the decision - you should ask what the procedure is, normally a specialist midwife will go through it all before you make the decision, and you will be able to see her again after the amnio to talk about it.

Personally we paid £100 for expedited results - since it takes 10 days and I couldn't wait that long to find out all was okay - we got the results in 36 hours.

I think btw in your case its 0.4% of having downs.

What would you do if it had downs? Given you may not find out for a while, and your pregnancy would have progressed further - ask yourself if you would terminate, if you would, then it's worth finding out, but if not, I don't think it's worth the risk, at least for me. I understand some people want to know as much as possible but if you aren't going to act on it, why take the risk?

Hi, I had a similar result to you (1 in 230) and was told that the risk of miscarriage from the amnio at my particular hospital was 0.5 % (which is 1 in 200). I made the decision not to have the amnio as this risk is higher than the risk of downs itself.

I agree with kat2907 that it is important to undertand what you would do if you got a positive result. In my case, i would not have terminated the pregnancy, so to risk miscarriage just to know for sure didn't make sense for me.

Just for info, i am now at 26 weeks and feeling very positive about the pregnancy, even with the uncertainty. In fact accepting the general uncertainty associated with birth/pregnancy has made a bit more calm if that makes any sense?!

Hi,
You have to ask yourself the question - what would you do if it was downs. If you would continue with the pregnancy, there is probably no point in having an amnio. If you would choose to end the pregnancy, then hasving an amnio is a good idea.

The risks associated with the amnio vary according to who is performing the procedure. When I had mine done, the obstetrician had had 3 miscarriages in 1500 amnios. I thought that was an acceptable risk.

Hi,

I had an amino on 25/06 due to having a 1 in 10 risk of downs. we choose to have the test as we wanted to know either way so we could prepare if our baby was downs as we had decided to keep it regardless.

when you have a high risk of downs its a very personal decision on how you decide to go forward. we found the whole process extremely hard to deal with but you just have to do what you feel in your heart to be right for you. We were very lucky to have a great consultant who gave us all the information we needed to make an informed choice of what to do next.

we got our results last tuesday and l'm pleased to say the results were normal.

good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and i hope everything turns out for you!
