Fell over yesterday and now quite worried....

I'm just under 13 weeks.

Yesterday I fell over the open dishwasher door. Actually landed on the door itself, after bouncing off several cupboards on the way down. Went down with an almighty crash.

Managed not to land on my tummy by instinctively twisting myself round, and landed on my left side. Big swelling on elbow, bruises on thighs and a bruise under my arm where my bra strap goes. Hurt, A LOT, but more shaken than anything else.

There was no impact to my tummy but could the shock have harmed the baby? We heard the heartbeat for the first time on Tuesday, and I just couldn't bear it if I had caused any harm with my clumsiness.

I ached lots last night, in my shoulders, had a warm bath and took paracetomol and went to bed.

Didn't sleep too well last night due to worry, so I'm tired but feel ok today.

I am sure the baby will be fine. Even if your belly had have taken the impact of the fall chances are everything would be fine, the baby is seriously well cushioned in there.

The shock factor is best counteracted with the happy vibes, do something you love doing, whatever it is.

I really wouldn't worry, hope your body recoveres quickly - your bruises sound really sore.

Hi, try not to worry as the baby shoud be safe in it's big sack of protective water. If you are worried, why not give the antenatal ward a ring in your hospital as they were great at reassuring me. They may even just give you a quick scan just to put your mind a ease.
My cousin fell down the stairs last week and she is pregnant. She was also badly bruised but baby was fine.
As long as you've not felt any cramping in tummy or loss of blood ( which I'm sure you would have by now ) then baby should be fine.

Poor you xx Keep us posted

julie, dont worry, there is lots of fluid around your baby that works as a shock absorber. Your baby will be fine, but if you do have any worries at all please ring your MW and have a chat, I'm sure she will put your mind at rest.

When I was about 25 weeks pg I fell over going in to the kitchen (Running away from a butterfly ) and fell smack bang on my behind with a big thud. DD is now 7mo.

Babies are very very tough, and survive very serious shocks, bumps and traumas with no impact on them. Thats what the fluid, and additional weight gain is for.

I agree with Natalie - think positive thoughts, but if you are really worried, you can call your midwife for some reassurance, maybe she could come out and let you hear the heartbeat for reassurance?

julietaboolie · 28/06/2008 17:25

I'm away from my doctor and midwife at the weekends - I have a residential job mid-week and only come home at weekends, so have kept all my antenatal care where I work and will transfer when I finish work at 34 weeks.

I'm at proper home at the moment, the fall happened at work. Could I ring the local out of hours doctor if I became excessively worried?

I've had no cramps or bleeding. We have the 12 week scan on Monday. If I don't get any pains I'll wait until then. It's the thought of it more than anything else.

And thanks for all your messages - feeling a bit calmer about it now.

And what IS this clumsiness all about? I've fallen over three times since I got pregnant (but this is by far the worst). I've also managed to spill hot chocolate on a 16 month old's head in the library.

I've always had a tendency to be cack-handed but this is getting ridiculous.

I understand how worried you must be but like all the posts have said, babies have a huge amount of cushioning around them to keep them safe from accidents like this. Plus you said you didn't land on your tummy so chances are it didn't even feel a thing. Yes, I don't see why the out of hours surgery couldn't help you if you get too worried but try to relax and take it easy.

Good luck with the scan on Monday x

thehouseofmirth · 28/06/2008 19:27

I fell over all the time when pg with DS. The first time it happened I was teary for hours so know how you feel but I'm sure it's OK. Appreciate you can't nip in to your local hospital but why not at least ring your own MW and see what she advises?

Pavlovthecat · 29/06/2008 08:37

How are you feeling today juliet??

julietaboolie · 29/06/2008 08:50

Feeling good today actually. Bruised but nothing else. Everything seems fine. Scan tomorrow so that'll put my mind at ease.

Thanks for all your comments.
