About to leave for luxury weekend away with DH. Hotel has lovely hot tub.

In the back on my mind I remember being told pregnant women should not use them?

Is that true? Why not?

Whats the difference to a bath?

I was told that when went to spa, might be something to do with the heat of the water and does it have bubbles that might pummel you a bit. I think they just have to cover themselves, won't be insured or something.

Sorry, clearly what I meant to say is thank you for the good advice.
Of course I will not risk it.
I shall dangle me feet in and drink OJ while DH wallows and sips champers.

the heat and bubbles increase your heart rate which in turn can artificially increase your blood pressure which is not good for baby.

EffiePerine · 27/06/2008 14:13

I think it's to do with raising your body temp - saunas ditto

Hope you have a lovely break

nowwearefour · 27/06/2008 14:14

i think the answer is a definite no

Romy7 · 27/06/2008 14:19

body temp thing - spent a glorious christmas with everyone else in the hot tub outside in the snow, gluhwein swilling merrily, and me with me cup of flipping oj and an extra coat.
merry christmas. bah humbug.
public stuff have big signs with a list of 'not ifs'... pregnant being the first one...

yomellamoHelly · 27/06/2008 14:19

My understanding was that they raise your body temperature which is bad news for cells multiplying etc. That said I think you could use your common sense and get out if you do feel you're getting too hot. I think your intuition knows what your body has to do (if that makes sense).

Hi

I did at 21 weeks pg whilst on a skiing hols - but thats a whole other story!

It's the temp that causes the problem when you are pg and in my experience outdoor hot tubs are rarely 'hot' most of the time they are just kind of luke warm bath temp iykwim.

It should have a thermometer on it so you can have a check and decide if it's ok.

If it has a lid on it (as it is outside) then they usually are very hot when the lid is first taken off - but after 15 mins being open and bubblin it's much cooler.

Hope that helps

no way

esp all the bugs breeding in there

I used a whole health suite (sauna, steam room, outdoor jacuzzi etc) when I was 14 weeks - didn't know I was pregnant.

I did notice that while usually I love saunas and stay in for 30 mins, I had to wuss out after 5 min, and couldn't stay in the 'proper' steam room at all. They did have an aromatherapy room that was warm not hot, which I quite liked.

The outdoor Jacuzzi was so good I stayed in it for two hours refusing to leave! The fresh March air and the bubbles on all my achy bits was wonderful. I'd check the temp and give it a go, on the grounds that relaxing is probably more important. And ensuring I had a strong partner who could help me out if I got a bit faint. There wasn't any sign telling me not to, either.

I thought it was just 'very hot' baths I was supposed to avoid? My physio's recommended hot baths in any case.

Dozymare · 27/06/2008 16:52

if it is an outside tub and has been bubbling away for a while i think you would probably be alright as they get quite cool if outside...a good compromise it to sit on the step going down so you get some of the benefit but not totally submerged! this is what i did whilst on a ski trip at 24 weeks and had a pashmina around my shoulders!!!

Important thing is to relax and enjoy your mini break!! How about a pregnancy massage instead>?!!

beaufies · 03/07/2008 13:30

In my pregancy book (written by an obstetrician) it says definately not n the first trimester thereafter 5/10 mins at a time only.

It is because your whole body is submerged in hot water and is therefore unable to cool itself and if your core temperature rises it can cause problems, most notably in the first trimester.

We have one in our garden and it was delivered the week after I found out I was pregnant I am now 23 weeks but I still haven't been in it as I can't be bothered to get changed and then have to shower and change again afterwards for the sake of 5 or 10 mins

DH goes in it every night with a bottle of beer and I'm sat on the bench nearby with a cup of tea !

chocbiscuits · 03/07/2008 22:37

My mum has a hot tub (its her major decadence) I went in it last pg but we limited it to 10 mins at a time and I tried to float the bump up and out of the water to cool it some of the time!!!

chocbiscuits · 03/07/2008 22:40

oh she turned it down at bit as normally has it at 37oC so she turned it down to 35oC.

kyme · 05/07/2008 03:04
