Early hyperemesis gravidarum in second pregnancy with a toddler

Has anyone had hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) from really early on, especially if you didn’t have it in a previous pregnancy?

I’ve just been diagnosed with HG at 6 weeks 5 days, and I’m feeling quite overwhelmed because I didn’t have it at all with my first pregnancy. I’m constantly wobbly and dizzy, have absolutely no energy, feel sick most of the time, and I’m doing a lot of dry heaving even when I’m not actually being sick much.

Did anyone else have similar symptoms this early? How did it progress for you, and did anything help?

Also, how on earth does anyone cope with HG while trying to parent a small child? I’ve got a toddler and I’m already struggling so much. I feel really lonely and quite down already, and I’m worried about how I’m going to get through the next few weeks. I’d really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences because I’m finding it quite scary compared with my first pregnancy.

God, poor you, I was really worried about this. Are you still working? I would get signed off as you can’t work like this. I’d consider maybe an extra nursery day as well if applicable. Is your partner supportive?

Had HG in all 3 pregnancies. The 3rd was made bearable by xonvea tablets. They're expensive so gps don't want to give them, but push for them and you'll feel loads better

Yes very supportive. I've been on annual leave this week when its all come to a head with illness. Drs have advised I get signed off - and honestly I struggle to get to the bathroom and back without feeling like im going to pass out so couldn't even try work.
Just money then becomes a worry. Another day at nursery would he an extra £250 the month 😓
I feel awful I cant play with him at the moment, he deserves so much better.
I started taking Prochlorperazine 5mg today. Will see what happens. Thank you for responding ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Can any family help out? My daughter was 7 so obviously much more independent but my mum had her pretty much 24/7 some weeks in early pregnancy.

I only have a sister near me who works full time and has a 3 year old herself (she said she will try and help bless her). Then my in-laws are in their 70s living over an hour away 😢 I just hope it goes away at 12 weeks 🙏

I did have hypnotherapy which was really helpful because I was being sick so often I was then terrified of being sick even in brief windows when I felt better! That really helped because I was so low emotionally at that point:

Recommend Xonvea, rest and taking it a day at a time. HG can be worse with tiredness so make sure you can sleep/ get family support if possible. Try eating plain foods (crackers/ crisps) even if you don’t feel like it as HG can be worse when you don’t eat, even if you really don’t feel like eating. It’s rough. Hope it improves soon for you

33 weeks pregnant currently with second pregnancy and a two year old…having HG pregnancy for both. Hit at 6 weeks this time rather than 7 in my first. Xonvea and Ondanestron combo has been my holy grail. I still don’t feel great and reduced hours at work after being off sick for 3 months. Hubby has had to step up to the plate a lot more! I still have toddler solo one day a week and it’s brutal but I still cherish that time and try and just do things she can self play with or more tv than I would like her to have!

Rockyroad1992 · 09/08/2026 20:57

You poor thing. I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant and was signed off sick for 8 weeks due to HG. I also have a toddler. I would say take the medication if it helps & rest as much as you can, take it one day at a time. I’m still struggling with the guilt of not being entirely present for my dd but there’s no point torturing yourself over it. Just do your best and remember that they won’t remember this. She has watched too much telly over the past few months but now I’m feeling a bit better I’m doing my best to get back to normality a bit. Hope you feel better soon.

I suffer with HG currently 19w and it has calmed a lot however, I am on the medication. I have cyclizone, Xonvea and metoclopramide. I believe Xonvea has been the most effective for me. I have only had to take a short amount of time off work, whereas last pregnancy (not prescribed Xonvea) I was in a very very bad way mentally.

I have missed my tablets for the last two days (pharmacy only had one of my medications and would not prescribe without the other) and my sickness/nausea is back, so I do feel the meds have massively helped hold back the worst symptoms

hellospringsunshine · 10/08/2026 20:46

Another vote for Xonvea here too. Im
now 26 weeks and it hasn’t completely stopped my nausea but has stopped me being physically sick. I’ve found it’s helped more than the cyclizone and prochlorperazine I was prescribed in my previous pregnancy with HG.

Hope you start to feel better soon x

I’m 11 weeks in to my second HG pregnancy - my son is 9, and I feel equal guilt. He doesn’t need playing with as much, but, we’ve had to cancel our family holiday. It’s really hard, whatever their age I think, and we all beat ourselves up. My guilt comes from the fact that he’s spending a lot of time alone as I can’t take him to see his friends, I’m a teacher too, so, hadn’t booked any holiday clubs - who are now fully booked of course….

Unfortunately, one of my vomit triggers is the smell of him (just normal clean smell!) so, as a cuddly boy, he’s really missing hugs too.

I started on cyclazine, as I used it last time, but switched to Xonvea a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it’s not making a lot of difference for me, but, lots of other people have had success.

I’ve asked my GP for something else, but, so far no success.

Im signed off as it started before the end of term, last time I was signed off until 20 weeks then did a phased return. I think I only worked “normally” for about 8 weeks before going on mat leave. Thankfully, it’s the same Head Teacher as last time, so at least I don’t need to explain it all again.

HG is horrific. But, we’ll all get there eventually.

annnnd now I need to put my phone down as another vomit trigger is reading and typing. FFS.
