TW... Possibly MC while abroad

Hi ladies. Just after a bit of advice/experiences please.

Im currently in Turkey on my family holiday. Day 2. Ive started to stain/spot when I wipe.
I had a MMC back in April so I have a bad feeling.
I should be 10 week 5 days now. I passed when I had the MC before (around 8 weeks) so thought I was out of the woods. Silly me...here we go again by the looks of it.

What im asking is has anyone ever experienced a MC while in a foreign country before? I really dont want to go to a Turkish hospital and leave my kids and husband behind at the hotel.
I passed my last MC naturally but it did take a full 2 weeks to complete.

I haven't seen a MW or had a scan back home in the UK yet. Booking scan is booked for 20th August when I would be 13+3.
Thanks for reading ladies and for any advice you may give a very anxious mama. ❤️
I should add. I'm 39 with 3 earthside children and 1 angel. 💙💙💙😇
So sorry for any mamas that have been through loss...it's poop.

Are you on pain?

Wherethedogsits · 02/08/2026 14:08

I’m so sorry. Can you email your GP/MW for advice?

I’ve had this happen- wasn’t great for various reasons. My top advice would be talk to your travel insurance early and see what they will cover especially if you need to fly back and you are not able to. In retrospect I wish we’d asked my parents or husband’s parents to come and watch the kids as I had to manage on my own and had a nasty one without being able to speak language and was quite horrible (wouldn’t have cost that much to do that where we were). Find out where to get proper thick sanitary towels, pain relief and think if there’s other clothes you need that you haven’t packed. Get medical records copies and scans etc as UK hospital was then quite disbelieving when got back. Early pregnancy unit in UK might also offer advice re pain relief etc. Hope none of this is needed x

Is it just blood when you wipe? Is it like a period? Or is it heavier?

There can be lots of reasons for bleeding in pregnancy and not all of them are a miscarriage. I had horrendous bleeding because of a hematoma, soaking through a pad in 20 minutes amounts of bleeding but baby was still okay. Some people have spotting from an irritated cervix, especially after sex.

If it was near the end of your holiday I would get a referral to EPU back home. In my area they would call you and book you in for a scan in a few days time.

This early on in your holiday I’d call your travel insurance. They will probably have a healthcare line you can speak to in the first instance and would probably make arrangements at a private hospital. To have a scan and see if your cervix is closed. If it is just spotting/some blood when you wipe I’d probably wait until I was back home.

Thank you for all your replies and advice ladies.
Im not in pain at the minute but I am starting to feel quite heavy down below if you know what I mean.
The staining has darkened as the day has went on unfortunately so it's probably not a good sign.
I looked through my travel insurance docs and it states pregnancy isn't covered "unless normal" . I will contact them anyway.
Its only me and my husband with our 2 young boys on holiday and im not confident on navigating this on my own ,going to hospital etc.
My partner is going to the pharmacy for me.
I'll try and do this naturally and hope all goes smoothly for the sake of my boys.
We only told them last night that they were going to be big brothers. Heartbreaking.
Thanks again girls. X

Thinking of you and sending love - I hope everything works out well for you & your family xx

PS Please don’t discount a hospital visit, soon. Your hotel may be able to assist with a translator, don’t be afraid to tell their on-call doctor or even a member of customer service management & ask for help.

I'm really sorry OP.
I don't want to sound negative or scaremongering but I would try and speak to the hotel staff incase you do need medical treatment so that you/ they can be prepared to make arrangements.
My first miscarriage I needed quite urgent hospital treatment and would have become very unwell if I'd continued to try and deal with it by myself at home.
As someone else said earlier on you may need 'proof' of medical treatment to take to the NHS when you are home. It could help you get additional treatment/ scans etc in a future pregnancy if that is what you want.
Thinking of you.

Hi ladies.
Just an update. Firstly, thank you for all your advice and kind words.
I went to see the hotel doctor who did tests (that cost me £1700) They then sent me to the hospital for an ultrasound as they couldn't determine cause of bleeding.
It was then discovered that baby had stopped growing at around 7 weeks (4 weeks previous)
A hematoma could be seen also which doc said was miscarriage/infection. I ended up having a D&C and a further aspiration this morning to get it all out.
The whole experience was traumatic to say the least. The hospital treated me well but not with the compassion back home would have.
I left with antibiotics and pain relief and have to follow up back at home next week to make sure all is ok.
Thankfully the hospital worked with my travel insurer who covered the costs.
Just sharing my experience incase others come across this post.
Take care everyone. Wishing you all the best with your pregnancies now and in the future. Xx

Just coming back to this because I went so far down the rabbit hole of hematomas and I think some things may have got lost in translation as your were abroad. It might be relevant if you want to have future pregnancies.

A hematoma isn’t a miscarriage or an infection. A subchorionic hematoma is internal bleeding between the amniotic sac and the wall of the uterus. In some people it’s a pocket of older blood more like a clot and in others it’s active bleeding and the pocket grows or changes shape. To resolve it either bleeds out or is reabsorbed.

It can cause miscarriage, as the pocket of blood leaves the body it can take the baby with it, or it can grow to the point where it can detach the sac from your uterus.

Some people have them early on and they resolve with no lifestyle modifications and aren’t an issue. Other people have them and they bleed and cause a lot of issues. The usual protocol is pelvic rest as a minimum. The one I had was at the point of doctors advising as close to bed rest as possible for a time but that isn’t standard.

People who have had them in previous pregnancies are more likely to have them again in the future.

I don’t think they’re generally linked to increased infection risk, I was advised that I could still go in a swimming pool etc with one.

Your miscarriage may be unrelated to the hematoma being there or the hematoma may have contributed to it. Though they aren’t usually associated with missed miscarriages (where the baby stops growing a while before the pregnancy passes).
