All over back pain!

I used to have some lower back pain at the beginning but lately I feel the pain ALL OVER my back - particularly the upper back now... I'm careful with posture and sit up/bounce on the ball every day, but doesn't seem to be helping.. is this normal? My book says that i will likely experience lower back pain but says nothing about the upper bit.

Also - is it safe to get a regular massage in pregnancy? I was thinking that might help... although not sure how I'd lay on the table exposing my back... hmmmmm

Do you have a supportive bra which fits properly - not having one can cause upper back pain in pregnancy because of the extra weight of your boobs.

Yes you can have massage in pregnancy - be careful of oils used though - some are not suitable - your therapist should know this.

If you are experiencing right hand shoulder pain or pain in the ribs though, you should call your midwife as this can be a symptom of pre eclampsia.

However most back pain in pregnancy is due to the extra weight you are carrying and the fact that you have the balance of a tellytubby.

You can have a back massage while lying on your side btw.

or a chair massage.

Thanks! That helps a lot whomovedmychocolate! I didn't even think about laying on my side. ha ha!
My bra size has remained the same (34B) throughout the 25 weeks so far, so no extra weight there, and bra is supportive...

I do have rib pain (all around the rib cage) but I was thinking I couldn't be at risk for pre eclampsia because I have extremely low blood pressure (which is regularly monitored), very low blood sugar and I haven't gained any "extra" weight (YET) besides the bump. But maybe I'm wrong about that... I'll bring that up to the midwife. Thanks - didn't even consider it before you mentioned it, but that's something serious to consider.

If you have low BP normally you won't neccesarily get a bp over 90 dystolic even with PET - but this can be ruled out with blood tests
