I used it when pg. Add it to orange juice- you can't taste it and it aids absorption. Eat lots of iron rich food as well and plenty of vitamin C.

dreamymum · 25/06/2008 16:42

did it help?
i thought iron and vitamin c sort of cancel eachother out if taken together?

vitamin C helps the absorption of iron! Milk hinders the absorption of iron.

So iron is best taken with a glass of orange juice.

fabulous stuff slightly metallic taste but as said with oj tis pleasant
got my iron up very fast in pregnancy

WigWamBam · 25/06/2008 16:44

It's fine during pregnancy. It tastes fine, as long as you mix it with fruit juice - otherwise it's horrible.

SOH is right - Vitamin C helps with the absorption of iron so taking it with orange juice is ideal.

It helped enormously and the super healthy diet helped me sustain my iron levels. I was still anaemic while pg but with more acceptable iron levels. I used it again after an em c/s and it does make a difference.

Vitamin C aids iron absorption afaik. Just googled, and it does!

ShowOfHands · 25/06/2008 16:46

And obviously these super intelligent women concur.

andiem · 25/06/2008 16:50

yes it helps yes it is safe it is much nicer to take than iron tablets as it doesn't cause constipation
and yes take it with fruit juice

whomovedmychocolate · 25/06/2008 16:55

Got me from a iron level of 3 to near normal in two weeks - two sachets in orange juice every morning then don't have anything else for half an hour. Tastes nasty though - like licking an old pipe IMHO.

ButterflyMcQueen · 25/06/2008 16:57

spatone is maintenance only - it will sustain an iron level but would be required in ridiculous doses to raise it

am anaemic now after taking 3 sachets a day through pg

advised to take alternatives

whomovedmychocolate · 25/06/2008 17:08

Well it worked for me Butterfly - when iron tablets didn't. I guess it depends entirely on your ability to absorb iron though and what else you are eating.

ButterflyMcQueen · 25/06/2008 17:15

maybe as i a vegetarian but my mw said she had done a survey

the dose is tiny though if you look on the box - compared to sytron the revolting stuff i drink now

spatone very palatable in orange

dreamymum · 25/06/2008 17:23

thanks!
sounds great i ordered it. i can't handle feeling like a dishrag anymore and all the irony foods have not made a difference.
great to know its milk and not vitamin c that affect iron absorption i will certainly stop drinking coffee every day!!!

Didn't manage to raise my HB at all using it - but once I'd got it back to an acceptable level (6.8 up to 10.8) I used it for maintenance.

Ferrous sulphate (the iron tablets they usually prescribe) is nasty stuff I always insist on ferrous fumerate which is much more expensive (hence the reluctance to prescribe) but far, far better.

ButterflyMcQueen · 25/06/2008 17:36

yes minster i think that may be what is in sytron
