Blood test results - can anyone interpret please?

Hello

I am 16 weeks' pg with no 3 and have just got my booking bloods back from the MW. I understand all of them bar 3 "extra" ones which were done.

Toxoplasmosis - IgG positive, dye test to follow. I asked the MW if that meant I was immune to tox and she alternately said yes and no, making me think she was not sure! Is the dye test to establish old / new infection? The results from that will be here in 4 weeks.

Parvovirus B19 - IgM Negative and IgG positive. I think this is Slapped cheek, which is rife in my DDs's nursery at the moment. Again the MW could not tell me if I was immune, she just said the results were "normal".

CMV - both IgG and IgM negative. I presume this means I have not had and am not immune to cytomegalovirus?

Any help gratefully received. Many thanks

Mary.

Don't know about the first 2, but you're right on your interpretation of the CMV one. I had bloods done for it after they detected a possible 'marker' on a scan, and had the same results back - basically, had never had it and therefore didn't have an immunity. Think that your midwife should at least offer to find out a definitive answer for you - odd that she seemed so flaky (though maybe not atypical sadly...)

Thanks Diege. The MW is lovely but often quite woolly. Had her in my second pg when her advice for everything was kind but vague. Pinning her down on things is hard. Happily as I have been pg 2x already I feel quite confident about most things, but this is one which I am not sure about and she hasn't reassured me at all.

are those standard tests? If so I wasn't even aware I had had them. My mw only mentioned about testign for STDs.

No they're not standard. I needed to be tested for slapped cheek in case my kids get it as it is harmful to the foetus. The test for slapped cheek apparently is done with the CMV and tox tests. I'm very interested about the tox one from a nosey POV as I've eaten raw / rare meat for years and wondered if I am immune or if I need to keep asking for things to be well done.

having just looked this up, I can tell you that the parvovirus B19(slapped cheek syndrome) result means you are immune to it, ie have had it in the past and so have antibodies against it. so no risk to you or baby.

the toxoplasmosis one is more complicated, as it requires a rise in IgG to diagnose recent (in past few months) infection, so a one off value isn't much use. not sure what the dye test means.

hope this helps, the info is from the oxford textbook of medicine, online, so quite reliable. Cass

That's great Cass thank you so much. good news on the slapped cheek. They will come back to me with the results of the dye test so perhaps it'll be a different MW who'll know a bit more.

Thanks once again.
