My child’s school done a family picnic event and we all decided to go.
during the event they were doing races for the kids like bean bag race and normal run. Child came running over all excited and told me there’s a mums race and wanted me to do it. I didn’t want to disappoint them do I decided to do it best I could. I’m 11 weeks pregnant and I tried my best to run as fast as I could trying not to push it but now I’m scared that running will cause harm to pregnancy or cause miscarriage/missed miscarriage.

could anyone help to advise or reassure me please

thank you

I did a Olympic distance triathlon at about 11 weeks pregnant and really went for it. Everything was fine and you'll be just fine too.

Exercise is generally recommended throughout pregnancy, with some adaptations, but many people run the full time unless they have specific medical conditions.
Talk to your mw or doctor to get advice that is specifically relevant for you.

Running in a parents race won’t cause a miscarriage. Relax ☺️

Do you have a particular reason to be concerned? If you have been diagnosed with a weak cervix then you need to be careful but other than that, exercise is good for you durng pregnancy. When I was pregnant I carried on running 5k 3-4 times a week until nearly 6 months and only stopped because I kept getting cramp in my calves. I still did other exercise after that. No idea if it's related to being physically fit but I had straightforward births and recovered very quickly.

Please dont worry. If something isn't good for your body in pregnancy the body is quick to say NO.

Your midwife can reassure you further at your next appointment. You aren't the only one - one of my friends stopped walking her dog as soon as she got a positive test. She was convinced any sort of activity was bad for the baby!

I didn’t know I was pregnant on my honeymoon, I was on antibiotics for an infected horsefly bite, drank booze also found a rogue packet of ciggies and smoked them. Ate pate and fresh ice cream and went paragliding and banana boating. When I found out I felt awful but all was fine. Try not to worry.

Exercise is good for you in pregnancy. You have nothing to worry about.

Just watching Henley Royal Regatta coverage and they were discussing a rower who raced in the very gruelling event when around 12 weeks pregnant-she didn't know she was pregnant. Baby is now a little boy called Rupert.

firstofallimadelight · 04/07/2026 17:02

The only issue you could have had was if you slipped and fell. Lots of pregnant women exercise during pregnancy because it’s beneficial

ToKittyornottoKitty · 04/07/2026 19:28

Running doesn’t cause miscarriage, and exercise while pregnant is good for you. Even if running was risky, a mums race wouldn’t be

Swissmeringue · 05/07/2026 22:29

You'll be fine, running doesn't cause miscarriage and exercise during pregnancy is good for you. DS and I won the preschool parent and child race this week and I'm 12 weeks pregnant. DD and I fluffed the 3 legged race against the other year 3's and their parents though, came 4th, we were robbed. 😂

If you need extra reassurance, the midwives helpline at Tommies charity is really helpful. (I had a panic about having been in a weirdly hot swimming pool, and they helped me feel much better.)

arethereanyleftatall · 05/07/2026 22:42

Why would you think exercise is bad for you in pregnancy? It’s the opposite.

Coconutter24 · 05/07/2026 22:54

If you are healthy and are having a healthy pregnancy then I’m sure you’ll be ok with a mums race. If you are concerned about anything you could always reach out to your midwife

Waitingfordoggo · 05/07/2026 23:00

Exercise in pregnancy is a good thing! It’s not generally the right time to start a whole new exercise regime for a total non-exerciser, but one short run at a family event is highly unlikely to have caused any harm. I was weight training, swimming and doing yoga until late into my pregnancies. All was fine.

MintChocolate123 · 05/07/2026 23:03

Where are you getting pregnancy related information from?

MxCactus · 05/07/2026 23:13

I think it's very unlikely to cause any issues! Also every time in early pregnancy I "overdid" it with exercise I started spotting. So I feel like your body tells you when you need to slow down. It didn't make me miscarriage though, and spotting stopped once I stopped the exercise. All my pregnancies carried healthy to term!

Why would you think exercise is bad for you in pregnancy? It’s the opposite.

I started bleeding every time I overdid exercise in pregnancy and was told by Drs to stop. So yes, exercise is good but if you over do it in pregnancy it can be bad.

Saying that most people can exercise fine in pregnancy and a short mums race sounds completely fine

Floppyearedlab · 05/07/2026 23:17

Seriously?
Were you planning on sitting on your backside for 9 months?
Women are encouraged to keep active in pregnancy. Trotting less than 100m isn’t going to do anything.

I saw a pregnant lady in my gym working out regularly and I asked how long to go. She said 3 days ago!

WashableVelvet · 05/07/2026 23:20

Hi OP. Given you already have a kid this isn’t your first pregnancy and you’re probably already aware exercise continues to be good for you while pregnant - so is there something else going on here? Anxiety perhaps? Worth looking after your MH and talking to your midwife if so. I had it, and it wasn’t fun!

50Balesofgrey · 05/07/2026 23:21

I fell off a horse, while jumping, as I didn't know i was pregnant at 10 weeks (he's 45, things were different then). He's fine.
