Inconclusive nine-week scan with twins measuring smaller and no heartbeat

Hello everyone, seeking reassurance for an inconclusive scan (although I'm expecting the worst outcome)
I had the scan at 9 weeks, told I'm expecting twins, but they are measuring at 5 weeks 3 days and no heartbeat. My pregnancy symptoms became stronger at week 7/8, so I'm wondering either its a missed miscarriage and my body hasn't reacted yet or perhaps the conception happened a lot later than I thought and thats why there are pregnancy symptons. The sonographer at the clinic said she couldn't tell either way. This is my first pregnancy so I haven't really much idea what's going on! Thank you for any experiences or advice shared x

The lack of heartbeat is a worry. Was it an internal scan?

@PrincessOfPreschool It was an internal scan at a private clinic. I'm going to contact my midwife this week to ask what to do next

That's a good idea. I would go to early pregnancy unit at a proper hospital with good equipment. They should do scan internally when it's so early as v difficult to pick up things when so small. I had issues with my son's scan at 7 weeks but at 9 weeks I had an internal scan and all was fine.

so sorry for your stress

what date did you get your first positive test xxx

Meggy89 · 28/06/2026 18:48

@Utardelis thank you xx my positive test was 21st May. I was tracking my ovulation too, ovulated approx 5th-7th

Oh I’m sorry. That doesn’t sound positive so keeping fingers crossed for you x

Really really sorry OP with your first test being that long ago I would prepare for bad news

I had an MMC we had a scan at 6 weeks all was fine, symptoms got worse at 8 weeks and found out at 12 weeks they had stopped growing at 7

so cruel that our bodies don’t realise these things

best of luck 🤍🤍🤍

I would also agree you need to prepare for bad news unfortunately. With a positive test on 21st May the absolute earliest you can be at the moment is just over 8 weeks (allowing for later ovulation and being 7dpo on first positive test). And there should definitely be a heartbeat at that point. Sometimes early scans can be a few days or even week out when things are so small but there’s a huge difference between a 5 weeks embryo and one at 8-9 weeks. I’ve also had a few missed miscarriages and sometimes my symptoms got worse even though it had stopped growing weeks before.
