Morning sickness timing at six weeks and whether to postpone holiday

We've just found out we're expecting. Very early so celebrating cautiously, we are be around 3.5 weeks currently.

We were planning a last minute holiday early in July (around the 10th) but now I don't know whether to postpone this as I'm worried I might get morning sickness by then - I'll be around 6 weeks?

If you experienced morning sickness, how early did it start for you and was it manageable?

Seven weeks with my first, 5.5 weeks with my second. The first few weeks I just felt very off, like low-key nauseous like I'd been spun too much on one of those spinners in the park. By week 7 it was a relentless 24 hour hangover sickness level. I was also knackered. So if it's a sit around by the pool holiday you might be ok, but anything more adventurous I'd go in your second trimester. My morning sickness had decreased a lot by 16 weeks and gone by 18.

TheCurious0range · 20/06/2026 20:27

I didn't get anything sickness at all, I didn't even know I was pregnant until 10 weeks , and that was because of weaning in the night to pee and increased thirst. I thought I had diabetes but thought I'd better check first (I'd been told by the NHS I couldn't conceive). I wouldn't cancel a holiday for something that might not happen

I got the sickness at 5 weeks and 1 day. It took me by surprise because I didn't get nausea like my mother. I got full blown vomiting that would disappear the second the clock struck 1pm.

At my height I lost 7lbs and was vomiting 5 times within a space of 6 hours. The good news is while it was very intense it only lasted for 2 months.

Managing it is less of making it 'go away' and more of damage control. Drink lots of water (it's easier to throw up without resulting in dry heaving and keeps you hydrated). Also crackers and picky foods are your friends. If you do get morning sickness, remember not every woman does, eat. You won't feel like eating but honestly eat small and often which is where crackers are a must. I lived off water, usami rice crackers, ginger snaps and ritz crackers taking tiny bites until that 1pm rolled around.

I would push back until you're in the second trimester. Not only because (probability wise) the worst of the symptoms will be out the way but you'll know by then what works for you. You also might have some of the nice pregnancy symptoms in the second tri.

My first pregnancy was a surprise and we had a trip booked for Lisbon which we went on when I was 7 weeks pregnant, trip booked before I was pregnant. It was quite horrible. I was experiencing horrible sickness at that point, I remember sitting in a lovely park with my DH vomiting in a carrier bag. In hindsight we shouldn’t have gone as I was poorly and exhausted, but you never know OP, you might be ok and you may well have mild nausea. Also as it was a city mini break it’s quite different from a beach holiday, I found it really hard going.
Maybe just try and factor in that you may need rest when you are away, all the best to you. Eat all the time and try and stay hydrated x

For me it usually starts between 6 and 8 weeks. It was the worst in my first pregnancy as I hadn't figured out the best ways to cope yet.

Personally I'd postpone until you're around 16 weeks. You could get nausea, food aversions, exhaustion. All would make a holiday less enjoyable.

HappyBlueDonkey · 20/06/2026 21:28

5 weeks for me. Wasn’t too bad until 9 weeks and continued until 1 hour before he was born. Vomiting 15+ times a day, I think go earlier or go in the 2nd trimester when you’ll know whether your sickness is bad or not

Overthebow · 20/06/2026 21:30

I got it from 6 weeks but mildly, I’d have been fine on a holiday. But everyone’s experiences are so different and you don’t know what your experience will be like.

MagnesiumBathSalts · 20/06/2026 21:33

Every pregnancy I found out just before I missed a period, like a few days before as the sickness kicked in immediately and always lasted until 25 weeks but I did have hypremisis with all 4 pregnancies. Could you book more last minute? You might be one of the lucky ones who doesn’t get sick!

eitherway, congratulations

Didimum · 20/06/2026 21:46

Mine started at 7 weeks and didn’t go away until 25 weeks +. Vomiting daily. I had holidays and weekend getaways during that time and honestly being in a different scenery with a different mindset than just the daily slog had a positive effect on how I felt. No, I didn’t feel great, but I could have been worse.

I don’t think it’s wise to anticipate pregnancy sickness and cancel living your life. In the absence of hyperemesis, steel yourselves and power through. The mindset can really make a difference.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 20/06/2026 21:47

I was a little sick feeling at that stage but was happier on holiday than I would have been commuting to work

ButterscotchBabe · 21/06/2026 13:58

I'm 6w5d with twins and have only had mild nausea so far which has been manageable. I could easily do a sit around the pool or beach holiday. The exhaustion however, would definitely stop me doing anything active. So really depends what kind of holiday you've booked

ArabellaWeird · 21/06/2026 14:02

You're going to get a range of replies here, and none of them will have any bearing on your experience. Strap in for an experience into the unknown for the next couple of decades!

DappledThings · 21/06/2026 14:03

I didn't have any symptoms at all around then. Are you sure of your weeks? At 3.5 weeks that's before a missed period so unusual to get a strong enough result to be sure of. If you mean you are about 3.5 since you think you conceived you are actually more like 5.5 now and nearer 8 weeks by your holiday.

Doctordoolittle · 21/06/2026 14:38

I’ve had some nausea from 8 weeks but no vomiting and it’s been very manageable (now 12 weeks). I would recommend getting your travel insurance before you book, so at least then if you find you can’t go as too unwell you will be covered,

Mclaren10 · 21/06/2026 14:45

Depends on the holiday and the pregnancy...I don't think I'd cancel, just be prepared to be more tired and maybe nauseous. No 8 hour hikes in extreme heat or rollercoaster type holidays but an average one...should be ok. Make sure you have holiday insurance.

luckylavender · 21/06/2026 14:46

I didn’t get morning sickness

Mclaren10 · 21/06/2026 14:47

I went to USA at 7 weeks...it wasn't ideal as I was trying to keep up with the group but I managed. I did get travel sickness due to the pregnancy too.

Mclaren10 · 21/06/2026 14:48

Next pregnancy I barely got morning sickness.

saraclara · 24/06/2026 15:56

I didn't get morning sickness with any of my pregnancies, and I don't recall friends having any big issue with it.

It would be daft to postpone a holiday 'in case' you got it. Very few people get severe morning sickness (though you can guaranteed that those who did will read your post and want to reply and tell their story of wire, whereas those who didn't will just scroll on!)
