Hi, my partner and I decided to stop using contraception. I know couples can have such a hard time conceiving and so didn’t expect it to happen very quickly but we got pregnant within a month. I’m 31, in a loving 10 year relationship but feel terrified. It happened soo quickly and haven’t processed it. It’s very early, only 3 weeks and 4 days and found out yesterday. I don’t know how to feel. Can anyone share their experience of how they felt when they found out. The excitement hasn’t sank it yet.

ps sorry if this triggering for women who are having a hard time trying to conceive, I aware many would love to be in this position.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

You have months to get used to the idea. Congratulations. You’ll be glad to be giving birth when the time comes. 🤣

Same here. Felt physically anxious for a few days. Took a month or two to get my head around it and then loved every bit of my pregnancy after that. Buying the little cute clothes, buying the pram etc, little cute dummies etc and also gender reveal and baby shower if that's your kind of thing (mine were very low key). Lovely memories when I look back.

I actually felt this way with my second DD. My first had taken over a year of trying to conceive but with my second it was within a month and I think I was just in complete shock, she was of course very wanted and planned but I wasn't expecting it to happen so quickly and I think because of the shock of that I wasn't able to enjoy the first few weeks of pregnancy.
i felt really guilty because the excitement wasn't there and even when we came to telling people I didn't feel like I did first time round.
the shock did gradually wear off though and once the sickness got better around 16 weeks that excited feeling grew, she's now a crazy 3 year old and I could never imagine life without her.

Congratulations! I had the same, conceived first month of trying. Had thought it would take a while as I was 32. DS was due right before Christmas, hadn’t planned for it at all! I found it a massive shock and was worried we’d rushed into it but as others have said the pregnancy gives you time to get ready.

I was prepared for second pregnancy to possibly happen quickly and the same thing again, pregnant first month of trying age 35. At least I was prepared it might the second time so we’d left a bit of a gap just in case!

I was prepared for my second to come quickly at 34 as my first was first month of trying at 32 but it took 3 years and ivf and now I’ve a 5 year age gap .. I appreciate this is probably unusual but I’ve been on both sides of it . It is a shock getting pregnant so quickly but it’s definitely better than the alternative !

Congratulations! I was the same - I’ve had 4 pregnancies (3 children and 1 miscarriage) and all 4 were within 1 month of coming off the pill. 2 of them were literally from only one time of having sex in the month as well - my youngest was because I was promised a lie in the next morning 🤣

I’m sure you’re all over it, but just in case you weren’t as it’s happened so quickly, make sure you get taking folic acid!

The shock will wear off, I promise! After that comes a weird mixture of joy and terror. I remember being so happy to be pregnant but absolutely terrified that something would go wrong, or I’d be a crap mum, etc. my two pregnancies after my miscarriage were full of fear compared to my first. I remember with my first going shopping in the spring, nice little bump showing, and just feeling so, so happy with life as I bumbled in the sunshine. I hope you can enjoy your pregnancy as much as I did that first one!

Congratulations again… and good luck!

We were 31, together 13 years and married for 4 years. I was pregnant within a month. A month later I found out it was twins. I wasn’t happy. My mum reacted by asking how we would cope! My closest chum had a toddler and baby twins. Her reaction was to offer commiserations. My pregnancy had me in hospital from week 17. I had a c section at 30 weeks.
We all survived. Life is good. Everyone is happy.

Yes, I was pregnant first month and it was a shock. That’s normal to be scared of how your life will change. It will be amazing. Now have adult DCs The days are long but the years are short- definitely true!!

This happened to me and honestly I cried a lot!

Came off contraception 18th March, positive pregnancy test by 6th April!

I expected it to take a good 4-6 months and I mourned the loss of the build up period I was hoping for. I had imagined “trying for a baby” to be a phase of life itself where we would have time to get excited and wonder what it would be like. We had just put our house on the market and thought a few months of trying would line up nicely with getting pregnant around the time we might have moved.

I didn’t want it to take an age but it wasn’t meant to happen so soon!

DH and I even discussed termination which feels crazy for a wanted pregnancy but I was freaking out and we both felt totally rushed and not ready at all. It didn’t help that I felt really dreadful for a few weeks in the first trimester.

All I can say is take time to process it and feel all the feelings. I’m 14 weeks now and feeling a lot better about things. Telling people really helped cement it as a real thing that was happening.

My house is sold, we have another one we’re buying. I’ll probably be about 6 months along which is less than ideal to get ready for baby but not unmanageable. And I just keep reminding myself that I am actually getting everything I wanted so perspective is important.

Lots of love ❤️

It’s pretty normal, I just felt weirdly blank when i found out I was pregnant with my first, even though it was planned. I had had this terrible fear that I wouldn’t be able to get pregnant but it just happened quickly!
Just give it time, you have a whole 9 months to prepare

IWantAShitzu · 21/06/2026 11:33

My first took 4 years - I was two days away from my first appointment to start the IVF process and I found out I was pregnant! I was terrified too so I think however fast it happens it’s always going to make you nervous!

we decided to try for our second when our first was 11 months, assuming it might take a while again. I ended up with two under two.

Babies number 3 and 4 were happy accidents 😭😅😅😅

congratulations and wishing you a happy healthy pregnancy xxx

Lots of people saying the same, and I agree: we thought we'd give 'trying' a try as we weren't 100% ready, but in our late 30s thought we were running out of time. 5 weeks later I was pregnant, so took it as a sign that we were ready (never felt like it though, and this was the first of many times when we looked round and thought 'Sh*t, what have we done?' The other main one being when we brought him back from hospital, and realised there was no backup, we had to find our own way to make parenting happen!)
Went on to have 2 more, bot of which took much longer to happen, so the feeling was slightly different.

BettyTheGreat · 21/06/2026 15:15

Yes, I had my mirena coil taken out to prepare to ttc later that year and then used a period tracker app to try to avoid getting pregnant. That didn't work and we ended up with our (amazing) ds. It was a surprise to begin with though
