Has anyone conceived naturally after irregular periods?

I've been dealing with irregular cycles and I'm wondering if anyone here managed to conceive naturally. How long did it take, and did anything in particular help?

My periods were a bit hit and miss over the years. I conceived DC3 on a long cycle - period was the last week of Feb and DS was conceived on the late May bank holiday weekend, positive test around 10th June, without having had a period in between.

Yes I have pcos though. Metformin was the game changer for me but you can get inositol which is a natural form which also helped x

Hello! Know the feeling. I’ve always had very irregular periods 33 days — 60 days usually between 40 and 50. Was terrified as a teenager and throughout my twenties that I’d never be able to get pregnant…

Turns out I have mild, lean PCOS. No insulin resistance, hormone panel normal except elevated LH throughout cycle, only symptoms irregular periods and cystic pattern on ovaries in ultrasound.

Anyway, between ages 29 and 32 I’ve conceived 3 times naturally all within 3 cycles of trying, most recently on the very first cycle. (1 miscarriage, 1 son and currently 17 weeks pregnant, all looking good). With my son I conceived on day 29 of what would have been a 44 day cycle, and with this pregnancy I haven’t had a period in 2 years thanks to pregnancy and breastfeeding!

I’d say don’t bother with ovulation tests, they’ll just stress you out when the cycles aren’t normal on the graph. Just have sex every other day throughout if that works for you!

I was taking Myo insotiol this time, which I read is good for mild PCOS even if you’re not insulin resistant, maybe worth a try?

Good luck, really might not be as big a deal as you think x

i don’t think there’s a link between regular periods and fertility. I never had regular periods and conceived each of my kids right away. Just means takes a bit longer to know you’re pregnant unless you are obsessively doing daily tests which i wasn’t

SquashPenguin · 16/06/2026 19:40

Yes- took my six years and four failed ivf cycles but by some miracle I fell pregnant naturally right after I paid for my 5th cycle. My cycles are chaotic to say the least, always have been. Periods last anywhere from 3-80+ days, and my cycles can be as short as two weeks to many months. No cause has ever been found despite extensive testing. No one was more surprised than me, took me a while to get back up off the bathroom floor when I took that test!

BigBrownBoogyingBear · 16/06/2026 19:54

Yes, my cycles were never regular and I conceived twice. DS1 took 9 months of trying. DS2 was conceived the first time we had unprotected sex - on day 30 of my (at that time) roughly 31-day cycle.

AnnaQuayRules · 16/06/2026 20:00

I had really irregular periods when I was in my 20s and 30s. I could go up to 3 months without a period.

On my 29th birthday we decided to start trying for a baby. DS1 was born 9 months later.

We wanted a second child but hadn't made a final decision about when to start trying. We failed to use contraception on ONE occasion when DS1 was a year old. DS2 was born 9 months later.

Weirdly, after DS 2 was born, my periods finally settled into a 30 day cycle and I could tell when I was ovulating. I sent DH for the snip when DS2 was a baby as I realised I was much more fertile than I had thought and I didn't dare risk a third pregnancy.

CrispAppleStrudels · 16/06/2026 20:08

I have PCOS / PMOS - for DD1 i needed fertility help (metformin + letrozole) but DD2 was a natural conception after I lost 10kg. Have you been checked out to see if there is an underlying reason for the irregular cycles? How irregular are you talking? I had 3 or 4 periods a year - one year only 2. So mine were very bad.

oddsoxxes · 16/06/2026 20:11

Acupuncture helped my cycles become more regular and I conceived soon after

MCF86 · 16/06/2026 20:22

Mine have always been irregular. I was pregnant within about 3 months of stopping the pill so hadn't even started trying to track them again yet.

kikika · 16/06/2026 20:37

I have anyways had irregular and sometimes non existent periods. pretty much as soon as i started ttc my periods stopped for four months which was not helpful!

as others have mentioned myo inositol was a game changer for me and gave me a semi regular cycle.

the cycle I got my bfp I also used the clear blue advanced digital ovulation test. it seems to get quite mixed reviews but it worked perfectly for me. it's good because it gives you a couple of days extra warning of ovulation than standard LH tests do (although I did use some of those too in conjunction). we would struggle to dtd every other day for two weeks waiting for me to ovulate so it was really helpful to narrow down a window of focus with slightly less urgency and pressure.

i also tracked bbt (vaginally!) to confirm ovulation. some of my first cycles were anovulatory but thankfully the myo-inositol was enough to fix that for me.

good luck!

Hohofortherobbers · 16/06/2026 21:08

Yes, I monitored my temperature to predict ovulation. Have a look at fertility friend website.

U53rName · 16/06/2026 21:12

My periods weren’t regular, so I bought those ovulation sticks that you pee on. First pregnancy took 2 months (31) and second pregnancy happened on the first try (33).

ellerman · 16/06/2026 21:21

I conceived my second of 3 children while not having had a period for 9 months. I tracked my cervical mucus, old fashioned way before ovulation kits were really a thing (1990s). I wanted to get the first passing egg. I have PCOS.

sorchanim · 17/06/2026 12:23

I have PCOS and was having periods every 50-60 days when I was TTC. I wasn't always ovulating either. It was so hard and took months of trying and getting frustrated as I didn't know when I was ovulating. Looking at CM definitely helped and trying a lot around that time. I also tracked BBT to see that I had ovulated, and also tried the ovulation kits (obviously after the first few months of them never showing anything I lost faith - but they worked eventually!). My first child was conceived on day ±37 of a ±54 day cycle! Had a period end of November and she was conceived at the start of January 😊
I used a printable fertility tracker and I also changed the way I tracked BBT based on a book I read (Getting Pregnant with PCOS by Clare Goodwin - highly recommend!). I put it in my mouth for 10 mins when I woke up without moving, and then turned it on and took my temp, it was way better that way!
I also took myo inositol/d-chiro inositol which definitely helped me ovulate. Good luck!

Swissmeringue · 17/06/2026 13:11

My cycles have been wildly hit and miss through the years. Currently pregnant with my third. It did take a while each time though. Good luck op..x

noramoo · 17/06/2026 14:43

I have PCOS and have a period every 45-60 days, I was convinced I would never be able to conceive naturally. Lo and behold, we conceived on our first attempt. I took inositol starting 4 months prior and I do think that may have helped.

Stegosaur · 17/06/2026 19:52

Yes, I had irregular cycles throughout my twenties, until I started taking inositol. They've been regular ever since. I conceived six times in my thirties, within 1-4 cycles.

If you can't fix your cycles with inositol or weight loss or whatever else, you can still conceive. I recommend trying BBT to get a better idea of what's going on. If you do it properly, it'll confirm when you ovulated (or if you didn't ovulate, which is important to know) and will tell you if your luteal phase is long enough, or you have a progesterone deficiency, etc. Useful information.
Also, if you have long cycles and you are TTC using the sex every other day method, you might get a bit worn out! With BBT, once you've confirmed ovulation has definitely happened you can have a rest!

AnonKat · 17/06/2026 20:03

I have a 6 month old after trying for over 5 years. I was only have a couple of periods a year. No cause was found. Since having my baby ive been clockwork!

Feb2024baby · 17/06/2026 21:15

Yes - I have Pcos and was doing inositol, low ish carb diet, vitamin D etc etc for months and still didn’t ovulate until CD70 but managed to conceive, so it is possible!

SupernaturalAddict · 17/06/2026 21:25

Yes- my cycles were anywhere from 10- 50 days. I charted my cycle (temp and other physical signs of ovulation) - before ovulation tests. I had multiple miscarriages, an ectopic and two beautiful boys. I'm now well into peri and my cycle has finally become regular.

worldshottestmom · 17/06/2026 21:29

I went 2 years without having a period, had one, then went another 2 years without having one. During that time had 2 kids naturally.

lljkk · 18/06/2026 09:11

For months for another reason, I took daily high doses (within safe limits!) of vit B6, my periods became much more regular then.
