I have had my dating scan today and everything is going well.
How should i tell my ds who has just turned 3 that i'm expecting?
Luckily a few of my friends are either pg or just had a baby so we have talked about them.
He has got the idea that the other children are brothers/sisters and that the baby grew in the mums belly.
What should i tell him?
We want to tell him before we tell everybody else.

My dd1 was almost the same age as your ds when I was first pg with dd2. We just told her there was a baby in my tummy. (she also knew something was up as I was sick for weeks).

She never asked how it had got there so we didn't tell her. She knew I was going into hospital for the midwife to help me get the baby out, and we told her very simply where the baby would come out.

Be careful, once you tell him he may make announcements immediately to neighbours, random passers by etc so make sure to tell your family soon after!

There is a fabulous book by the guy who does Purple Ronnie called 'there's a house in mummy's tummy'. Buy him that - it's actually really fab! DD got the idea very quickly (and she was only 13 month or so when we told her. Congrats btw!

Thank you both!
I asked him yesterday if he could have a baby sister or a baby brother whta would he like.He said he would like a sister to stroke and a brother to play cars with.
When i asked him which one he would prefer he said both please mummy.
Bless him.

We showed them a picture of a scan and asked them (7 & 5) what they thought it was...'an elephant? a peanut?' and then explained what it was. Had to be sure we were ready for entire world to hear after we told them because my dd's are just like that . I also told them it would be a long long time before they met her, as 6 months is a very long time to a little person.

onepieceoflollipop · 23/06/2008 21:49

I told dd1 at around 12 weeks (once we had had the first scan) and she coped with the waiting for 6 months. We tried not to have many specific questions about whether she would prefer brother or sister. She was adamant only a sister would be acceptable so obviously we decided to have a girl!

It was nobodysfool, also on a slight hijack they are very close. So many people tell you that your dc1 will be horribly jealous and that wasn't our experience at all, perhaps we have been lucky.

PeachyWontLieToYou · 23/06/2008 22:34

oh dh announced it lol with the 3 lined up on the sofa

was very funny

PInkyminkyohnooo · 23/06/2008 23:10

I told them I have a baby in my tummy so please stop jumping up and down on it!

DS(age3) has now been going around with a clockwork kitchen timer up his shirt claiming it's his baby.
He is really looking forward to it. DD (20 months) has no interest whatsoever, but she does love babies, so I'm hopeful.
