**TMI pic warning** is this normal discharge?

I am 12 weeks 5 days today and I have been needing to wear pantyliners due to increased discharge for the majority of the first trimester.

I have been noticing this discharge for at least the last 4 weeks and thought nothing of it, but I’m now worrying myself it could be amniotic fluid.

I have seen online that amniotic fluid has a distinctive sweet smell but that normal discharge also can. I can’t distinguish specifically, sometimes I feel like I can smell sweet and other times I feel like it smells musky like normal discharge but I don’t know if I am just overthinking things. It looks pale yellow in the picture but is more beige in real life. It doesn’t feel wet to the touch and I don’t feel myself leaking.

Please be kind. I am incredibly anxious about this pregnancy after a loss in November.

This is normal. In pregnancy your discharge will also completely change about 5 times, you’ll get any and all types. Often it’s more watery/ liquidy and can’t tell if actually just peed slightly or not. I’m 29 weeks now and it’s also been thicker and almost a green yellow sometimes which is also completely normal. The smell you would get is very fishy if it’s BV. Thrush is common in pregnancy but if you’re not irritated/red down there & it’s not very grey with a smell I wouldn’t worry. Even with either of those, you can check with midwife at next appt and they’re really easy to get rid of by cream/plessary so discharge is rarely a reason to panic.
I’ve also had pink discharge (obv mixed with blood) and triage said it’s completely normal due to everything moving around.
If you start bleeding red, get checked.

oh last thing, your mucus plug can also come away in bits, again, common, and does regrow. Also had this (after baths usually) and no cause for concern. It’s extremely rare for someone to leak amniotic fluid especially early on, and isn’t a normal sign of miscarriage either. If you stay anxious then contact midwives so they can do a swab to test it- but be prepared for them to say no as discharge is normal xx hope you feel better soon

Thank you so much for your reply and your reassurance.

I have definitely noticed different textures of mucus during this pregnancy! Sometimes it’s really snot like and other times more watery, but was just a little concerned at how this was drying/potentially smelling so worked myself up that it could be worst case scenario!

Thank you again. Wishing you all the best in your pregnancy xx

The midwives have been asked everything, don’t be afraid to still ask them. Pregnancy is so strange! And every couple of weeks there’s so many new symptoms that nobody warns you about. The fact that maternity triage won’t see most women unless they’re red bleeding, or baby stopped kicking, tells me that everything else is pretty much normal. I still scroll MN and Reddit for hours finding people with the same symptoms which helps. All the best & congratulations!! Xx

Yes absolutely and it seems so many women have so many different symptoms despite all being pregnant! It’s certainly a rollercoaster but I want to try and enjoy being pregnant as it’s something I’ve wanted so long - easier said than done though! I am a serial forum scroller as well haha xx
