Giving birth in Paris, hoping for a natural birth as an English speaker

Apologies, or should I say desole, its another giving birth in France thread. I appreciate there have been several before but most are quite dated and I had quite a specific worry and was hoping there might be some French citizens and or midwifes on here.

Gave birth to DS (now 2) in London in St Mary's at their birth centre and whilst the newborn part didnt quite go to plan, I had a very positive experience with my water birth and gas and air for support. Some tears but generally a straightforward vaginal birth which even though he came out hand first (!) went well considering he was originally back to back (he turned mid labour thankfully and painfully haha).

Now im living in Paris and have recently found out im expecting baby number 2 in Feb 2026 (all being well obviously). We live in the Nueilly area so close to the American Hospital which would be great if we can afford it but I am also wondering if anyone has any knowledge of a birth centre similar to St Mary's in the western suburbs of Paris or even further into the city. Basically I am torn as id like to be in a hospital as my french is not strong enough, but also sad I might be forced down a more medical route.

Sorry for the ramble but grateful for any responses and apologies if I come across naive to the system, I am in the French health care system with a carte viteal and covered by my husbands (albeit modest) mutelle - but really am trying to ascertain if there is a way to give birth more naturally as an English speaking second time mum.

Merci!

I had my 2 in Neuilly about 10 years ago - now I went with Neuilly-Courbevoie, not the American

Found the care really excellent, before & post partum, but I was't specifically looking for non-medicated. They didn't push the epi, but when i asked for it I got it very quickly. I will say though, I didn't test out their English, the whole deal was in French

I don't remeber there being any other birthing centres around the area.

Gas & Air isn't really a thing in France as far as I remeber

Hi there,

Thanks so much for getting back to me and great to hear you had such a positive experience! And yes - sadly I have a feeling I wont be getting gas and air this time as you are correct, it doesn't appear to be a thing!

Just a quick question - is there a chance the Neuilly-Courbevoie hospital you mentioned is now called River Siene? And are you a native French speaker and thats why the English was never tested?

Thank you so much!

Ooooh it is !!! I just googled it, that's the one alright.
Yeah, my French was native-level, so didn't need to do anything in English

It is definitely a "hospital" vibe ... but even 10 years ago they had great facilities for labour, and i used a kind of bathtub thing before i got the epi. I wouldn't have been able to give birth in that though. I had a long labour with my first and need an instrumental birth with episiotomy, and the obstetrician that did it was talented - i never had an once of trouble with that scar at all, barely felt it after the birth. They gave me fantastic breastfeeding support on my first, but were also absolutely fine when i didn't want to BF my second.

You could call in and talk to them, and get a feel for whether or not they would be able to manage in English - given the international populaiton aorund Neuilly / La Defense etc, I wouldn't be surprised if they were well used to english-speaking patients
