Has anyone had really bad sickness in their first pregnancy but went on to have a more positive experience 2nd time round? I am currently trying for 2nd baby, and am so anxious as to how im going to be this time around.. hence waiting so long to do it again!!

Every pregnancy is different, you'll never know. But being prepared for it means you can speak to health care providers and start taking precautionary medicines early on, hopefully preventing it worsening to the same degree.I had almost no symptoms with baby 1 but had every text book symptom with baby 2.

No. Both bad.

Goblinmusic · 02/06/2026 13:52

Yes!

Horrendous first pregnancy with my DD. Vomiting twenty times a day, not keeping water down, lost 15 pounds in 6 weeks, basically on deaths door.

Second pregnancy has been so much better. A little nauseous, maybe vomiting once every other day, and symptoms completely cleared up by 12 weeks. 36 weeks now so getting close to the end!

TheBluntSeal · 02/06/2026 13:52

Yes.

First pregnancy I was sick multiple times a day from 13 week until birth. Could only eat a limited diet (for some reason Burger King beanburgers would be okay most of the time, and Horlicks/Ovaline drinks). Kept fainting throughout the day, lost weight, and I'm sure I had DD1 at 36 weeks because my body wanted her out.

DD2. A hint of nausea a few times a week and could eat pretty much anything I fancied.

I know people who have had HG in their first pregnancy but not second so it does happen.

RachShad · 02/06/2026 18:36

Thanks guys!! Made me feel a bit more optimistic for when it happens!!

No, very sick in both. But at least with the 2nd I knew straight away to request the medication so got on top of it quicker

Very sick for the first three and not so bad for the fourth but she was a girl so maybe that made a difference !

Do you feel the meds have helped getting them sooner?

Same here!

However, I have had friends who had no sickness first time and awful sickness second time!

Pulledbluecurtain · 02/06/2026 21:08

Me. First time i was so sick, couldnt eat anything until like 18 weeks and threw up constantly. Lost so much weight, probably should have had intervention.

Second pregnancy, still morning sickness but was more normal. A little nauseous morning and evening but only threw up maybe 10-12 times total the whole first trimester and felt totally grand by 13 weeks. Totally manageable and normal.

PedanticPrincess · 02/06/2026 21:09

No, it got worse with each pregnancy. First (dd) I just felt nauseous, second (dd) nausea and vomiting and third (ds) I was bed-bound at the start with terrible nausea and vomiting which continued for a long portion of the pregnancy.

RachShad · 02/06/2026 21:17

Looks like everyone is completely different and every pregnancy is totally different, which i guess I knew but nice to hear of others experiences! Thank you all for replying!

Yes! I had hyperemesis in my first pregnancy to the extent that I was hospitalised and felt poisoned from the inside out until six/seven months, even with multiple medications. I was so anxious to have another child in case in happened again, but currently 23 weeks and doing well. I felt very nauseous and had major food aversions until about 14 weeks but was only actually sick a handful of times. It’s been a revelation to have a more ‘normal’ pregnancy. Starting medication early can really help if you start experiencing sickness again. Good luck OP, I know it’s nerve racking and daunting but it can be very different with another pregnancy.

Superscientist · 03/06/2026 20:22

I had hyperemesis in my first three pregnancies one birth followed by two miscarriages but escaped it in my 4th and final pregnancy but developed other complications instead.

I read studies that showed that starting medication sooner helped.

Shshshsgs · 03/06/2026 20:26

I was very sick with the first two and a bit less sick with the third, possibly because I started taking Xonvea as early as I could!

didgeridid · 03/06/2026 20:31

Yep! I was sick a couple of times each morning every day for 6 months with my first, then it went to nausea for a bit.
Second, a whiff of nausea at the beginning maybe 2 or 3 times and that was it! I fact, until he moved and my belly grew, I wouldn't have known I was pregnant as the symptoms were totally different!

Definitely. It takes about a week for the Cariban to fully work and starting earlier meant I was feeling better by week 8 when previous pregnancy i was trying out different drug combinations til we found what worked. I will say I need more intervention this time in that I had to take 4 Cariban a day and stemetil 2/3 times a day whereas 2 Cariban worked last time. This could also be because I started the meds when the sickness was at its peak whereas I was still just puking my guts up at that stage in pregnancy 1!!
