Dental work in pregnancy?

In a proper panic. Just bit into my tea and my tooth just cracked and came away, I’m unsure if it’s a crown or a tooth but I think it’s a tooth, I am terrified of being stuck with dental pain ( so far so good ) I’m just about to do a salt water rinse but will they treat me? A filling came away earlier in my pregnancy and they would only put a temp fix on it ( which has been fine) I am 31.5 weeks pregnant.

Has anyone had anything similar with a non painful ending?

Any dental treatment is perfectly safe during pregnancy except if the tooth is so damaged it needs an amalgam filling (silver) then a temporary filling will be placed until baby is born or you have stopped breast feeding.

Thank you! That’s made me feel better! Im going to call first thing and try and get appointment,

It does not hurt yet so I’m praying it stays that way. It’s really hard to work out what’s come away as I couldn’t find it but a corner of my tooth for sure and I can’t work out how deep .

Just to add to PP, I had to have a filling when pregnant and was given a white filling instead, nothing temporary so I saw that as an added bonus 😂

Thank you. I’m worried about the root. Because they can’t x ray I imagine? Would they do a root canal and I’m paranoid I’ve broken that. Years ago I had tooth problems that lasted weeks and the pain nearly broke me. The thought of pain whilst in the last few weeks of pregnancy is giving me the fear

Teeth get weaker during pregnancy.

I needed a wisdom tooth extraction two weeks before my due date and was really concerned and nervous due to the local aneasethetic. I asked the dentist if it was definitely wise to go ahead, and he said 'he'd tell his wife to do it', so that was good enough for me. He also said having having toothache was the last thing a woman needs when having a baby.

Dental x rays are perfectly safe during pregnancy. They go no where near baby and have same radiation as eating two Brazil nuts or flying half way to Spain.

Teeth don’t get weaker during pregnancy , once they are formed they are formed and calcium cannot be taken out from them, however vomiting or changes in diet like snacking can affect them.
You are more prone to gum problems because of hormonal changes.

I’m really interested in this- I was told by my dentist my fillings would need to wait until after the baby is born! Now I’m questioning that…
Hope you’re not in too much pain, OP. Tooth problems suck!

This was actually why I was so worried as so was I. Which is why I wrote this post actually as the fear of being left in pain in terrifying me. It seems maybe they only do essential ones . I am going to beg for an appointment tomorrow and can update then

I had some proper dental work when pregnant (local anesthetic). I was very worried but my dentist reassured me and I checked a few papers on the subject myself as well. All good!

Sickallday · 02/06/2026 10:34

I have an appointment at 11.20. Keeping everything crossed they can help me swiftly, so far no pain just very away a lot of my tooth is missing as it’s rough and sharp and sensitive to liquid

Hope your appointment went well and that you’re feeling ok, @Sickallday?

Sickallday · 02/06/2026 18:36

Ah thank you. So she’s put some temp filling on it and said that it was clean and should not hurt . Keeping absolutely everything crossed for that . Once baby is here I need a crown but she thinks it will be fine until then so they don’t do it when pregnant so keeping everything crossed . I’m seeing my actual dentist on the 16th for a check up so hopefully he can make a plan then. Honestly I got so worried . Toothache is my biggest fear sometimes after suffering terribly in my early 20s when I had no dentist and had a horrendous abcess that took way too long to get help for. I have had dental insurance ever since as of scared me so much
