ok so id never had piles until a few weeks until ds was born. Asked gp about it at check up and said used anusol which did nothing. At a later date she gave me some supositary (SP!) which grossed me out as they were huge and just couldnt hack the feeling!

Anyway is the word piles a general word? Do you get more than one? Sorry this is v TMI but i have one 'lump' bit around my ahem hole which im saying piles but is only one thing. Is it one or do you say thats piles plural?

Also it doesnt cause me any pain but is starting to annoy me esp as worried will get worse as am 18 weeks pg so what other products will work? A friend of mine had hers removed by lazer (gulp!) in hospital and my gp said thats all you can really do to get rid of them!

Not something i want to go through esp after childbirth a 2nd time. Any suggestions to eradicate??

Oooh, a taboo!

I'm sure loads of people have them. Pileii in plural?

They can be singular, the pessaries do work but surgery probably is the only long term cure. Otherwise they'll/it'll probably reccur with pregnancy and may do so regardless.

In the meantime, witch hazel compresses can really help.

Yup, can help to shrink it/them! It's an astringant.

Ok I got this off the babycentre board. Peel a clove of garlic and soak it in oil for 24hrs. Then use it as a suppository . It sounds horrendous but it really does work. It relieves the pain and shrinks them. You may need to do it for a few days to have a lasting effect. HTH

I'm thinking Ellie is not sexually active if she's doing this - at least I hope so

Okay Mad4mybaby - yes suppositories are the devils droppings - but they do work on internal piles. However if you have an external lump - which is very common - you need ointment. I would recommend you request proctosedyl, it feels nasty and greasy but it doesn't burn the way Anusol/over the counter ointments can. Also you need to apply it regularly (by which I mean at least four times a day) and especially at night. It will make your knickers greasy too. But it does work. It's stronger than any of the other medications which are generally given - which is why you can only use it for five days but it does seem them off at the pass.

I speak from uncomfortable experience

Sorry to hijack! Can I use Proctosedyl again a few weeks later? I tried it for 5 nights at the end of May but my external lump is still there! It never really stings but has started to give me pain when sitting too quickly (ouch!) Funny that it only really started itching when I used the cream!

Hello mad4mybaby. Have you tried any homeopathic remedies? I had the very same experience as you and had some piles in other 'areas'. I took hamamelis on the advice of a homeopath during pregnancy (now 39 weeks +5) with no ill effects and good results. The info is on Ainsworth's homeopathic pharmacy website here. The upside is that it also dealt well with varicose veins in my legs. Result.

Yes you can reuse it but you need to leave a week between courses to prevent too much steroid being ingested (it'd make you fat). Itching is a sign that the pile is healing and shrinking btw. gillythekid.
