Progesterone Suppositories- Advice!

Hi ladies, I’m around 4w5d pregnant after a miscarriage at 6w2d in April. I wondered if my miscarriage was caused by low progesterone as I have a history of PCOS so since I’ve found out I’m pregnant again I’ve sourced a private prescription for progesterone and
been prescribed cyclogest 400mg twice a day.

I have some questions (which I probably should have asked during my consultation but have just come to my mind since!) that I’m hoping some people here might be able to help with!

  • I was told I could use them vaginally or rectally, I’ve taken tonight’s dose rectally as I read this was better to avoid mess but now I’m worrying it’s less effective than taking it vaginally?
  • Did many people end up with spotting whilst on them? I’m worried this is going to be really triggering after my miscarriage
  • How long did you lie down for after inserting or did you just pop and go?

Any other advice/tips/tricks would be welcomed also! Thank you ☺️

I'm sorry for your loss and congrats on this pregnancy.

-I tried vaginally and agree there was a lot of mess and I needed to wear panty liners.
-Rectal was a few seconds of discomfort (a dab of lube on the end helped) but no mess
-I don't recall being told to lie down afterwards at all- but this was a few years ago now. If using rectally, make sure you don't insert it into a stool though. It needs to be against the bowel wall to work and absorb. Its common to see it come out in your next bowel movement, so don't panic.
-I had no spotting at all when using them.
-I was given them after IVF and 2 previous MC's. Sadly, that 3rd pregnancy when I used the progesterone also resulted in MC, but it had nothing to do with the suppositories.

Wishing you all the best x

I took progesterone through both of my successful pregnancies after 3 miscarriages in a row. I took the progesterone rectally, as I was told it could irritate my cervix and cause spotting, which would have made me even more anxious!

As it was, I did end up spotting / bleeding lightly through both of those pregnancies anyway, but at least I knew it wasn’t the progesterone causing it.

I just used to pop them in and get on with my day, I didn’t lie down after taking them.

Wishing you the very best with this pregnancy x

My clinic said to take them vaginally, no mention of rectally from them although I’d seen in mentioned online. They didn’t cause any spotting but are messy so I used pantyliners. I set an alarm for 30 mins earlier than I usually get up and put the morning one in then and went back to bed. Evening one I put in before going to bed.

Rectally is, In my opinion, much easier. No need to lie down or anything. I had lots of spotting (sometimes even heavier) but two successful pregnancies (IVF).

GOOD LUCK!!!

in first 12 weeks I was told specifically to use them vaginally (by IVF clinic), I even asked after a few weeks in which spotting did occur if I could take them rectally (after reading online) to reduce spotting but was told not to as the studies on efficacy were done on women who took it vaginally. This was told to me by the EPU. I was then discovered to be at high risk of late loss/extremely preterm from 16 weeks onwards, so had to start taking them again, and again was told vaginally only, this time by 2 consultants, again citing what the research was based on. (I'm now well into 3rd tri).

If its just mess that's annoying you, just change your underwear more often! I've gotten so used to changing a few times a day now. The spotting was scary and may or may not have been the progesterone alongside a sch. But I was told it wasn't a reason to change.

Just repeating what I was told, if you've been told different by your healthcare provider then follow what they say. Best best of luck in the coming weeks <3
