Would you travel to a wedding in France at 29 weeks pregnant?

We have been invited to a friends wedding in France in August. I was really looking forward to it but assume I won't be able to go as I'll be 29 weeks pregnant?

This is my first pregnancy so I'm not sure how I will feel at that stage. I would appreciate some advice (knowing that I may have to cancel at short notice regardless, if anything isn't going well).

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes, I'm sure. I used to work in France and I visited a friend in hospital there. It was luxurious compared to here, and her doctor was very handsome. Doesn't mean I'd be happy to unexpectedly go into labour away from home though.

But all this is by-the-by - I don't want to scare a first-time mum. She's looking for opinions and the majority say she'll be fine to travel, and she'll be home in plenty of time, and odds on she will be.

I’m sorry if I gave the impression that I was arguing with you! I was just reaffirming that yes, it could happen. Obviously it doesn’t happen THAT often, but you’d want to keep the possibility in mind.

I don’t think the situation was exactly ideal for my NCT chum, but they just made the best of it (and as I say the baby thankfully wasn’t in any danger).

France is fine, short flight, good hospitals. Have insurance and a ghic card.

Thank you, that's kind of you. Ignore me - I'm a grumpy old bat!

I’d do it without thinking twice, unless the pregnancy was difficult and I felt very unwell. The only other thing that would factor for me would be where in France the wedding was — the south can be unbearably hot in August.

I can't really understand why anyone would suggested driving/getting the train over flying. You'd spend significantly more time in the car and wouldn't be able to stand up and get around.

It's up to you and how you feel, but I would certainly book and plan on going at 29 weeks. Like lots of others here, I flew abroad at 34 weeks as I had no complications and felt good in myself. Don't base your fears on other peoples scary, but isolated experiences.

It’s entirely up to you and how you’re feeling. My partner suggested we have a babymoon, and for me there was no way from 30 weeks I wanted to be more than 20 minutes from my hospital. Rationally I know it’s fine, but only you can answer how you feel and what makes you comfortable

Yes go! You can pick a fabulous maternity outfit and enjoy catching up with all your friends. Having a baby is wonderful but make the most of this time where you can socialise whenever you want.

Yes, you might get lucky and get to give birth in a French hospital and stay for three days (see other thread)

Can you fly at 29 weeks?

Yes

SockQueen · 13/05/2026 11:25

Yes, I would - I went to the Pyrenees at that gestation. Make absolutely sure you have good insurance that not only covers you, but baby if they arrive early - neonatal care is £££

My sister had a premie at 26 weeks, I think that's what scares me, and having never done it I don't know if it'll be hard to move about at that size. Train not viable due to relative locations of home and wedding, so it would be flight.

A premie would be in some of the safest places in the world in many French maternity units. Depends on how rural the wedding is.
