Nine weeks pregnant and struggling to drink water with nausea

Hey all,

Currently 9 weeks pregnant and I am lot sicker this time than I was with my daughter. I am usually a big water drinker but since about 5 weeks pregnant, I cannot STAND water. I am now drinking cordial which I dont like the idea of tbh but anything to get my fluids up. It's still a struggle though, I am managing maybe about 1.5L a day. I try and force more down but my nausea is killing me.

Just a bit worried :(

Try to drink when thirsty. I wouldn't force it down as that will just make you miserable. You could try non alcoholic ginger ale or tea as ginger helps with nausea. Or try lemon squash. Don't worry about cordial or plain water. Water is water. If you like cucumber and melon, you could add this in as it counts as well

Small frequent sips of whatever fluid you can tolerate.

Thank you both :)

See your GP, get some anti nausea drugs! They work. (Had to get some Cyclizine recently myself for first trimester sickness.)

boiled water was more palatable to me when pregnant but like others have said any fluid counts.

Try coconut water? It's rich in electrolytes as well. Maybe sip small amounts frequently rather than drinking a cup at a time. Hope it gets better soon x

Try ginger ale or hot water

Oh bless you. Try some herbal teas, peppermint or lemon & ginger might help with the nausea too.

I had this with hyperemesis. I normally drink lots of tap water (in Scotland, tastes amazing) but even the thought of a glass of water made me so sick. I phoned a helpline I found on a hyperemesis website and a lovely lady suggested things like eating lots of watermelon, fizzy water etc. I think I lived on watermelon, fizzy water and salty crisps for quite a while!

Do ask your GP for antiemetics. I tried four I think before I got one that helped.

I could only drink fizzy water when I was pregnant. At my worst, I used to melt ice cubes or ice lollies in my mouth.

DeafLeppard · 02/05/2026 07:41

Can you manage ice lollies?

Bikenutz · 02/05/2026 07:42

I would just go with whatever you are drawn to within reason! Are dairy or plant milks a no no?

Thanks so much everyone! I will give all of your suggestions a try 🤍
