Just got my appointment today for my first scan but its a month away. Ill be almost 15 weeks by the time of the scan.
Has anyone experienced this kind of delay currently in their trust? It seems rather shocking that women are now waiting until 14- 15 weeks for their first nhs scan

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

When my children were born the first scan (SE trust) was at 10 weeks. My sister was Belfast trust and the scan was at 13 weeks. Do they scan for the nuchal fold now? They didn’t then, so I don’t think they were as bound by timing as the rest of the UK, is it possible this is still the case? Either way, it’s a long wait.

With my last pregnancy I didn’t have a nhs scan until 16 weeks as I hadn’t informed the doctors until I was 10 weeks so it delayed the scan. I was told by the doctors I should’ve informed them by 8 weeks in order to get the scan at the traditional 12 weeks.

Oh gosh thats a long time.
I referred at 6 weeks and had my booking appointment last week . I wasnt expecting the wait to be so long. Im western trust.
I was last pregnant 2 years ago and had my first scan done by 13 weeks

I would call them as this may be an admin error. I was always told dating scans needed to be under 14weeks to be accurate as the fetus grows at a standard rate until that point.

i am western trust too and my booking appointment isn't until I am 13 weeks! To be fair I didn't self refer until just under 8 weeks as I've a history of recurrent miscarriage. Can I ask did you only get your scan after your booking in?

purpleflurple · 28/04/2026 13:26

No this is not normal but is probably because of long waiting lists. I have heard of a few hospitals recently where everyone is getting scanned later because they are just at capacity.

You need to have it done close to 12 weeks if you are having the test for nuchal fold along with blood test for Down’s syndrome and the other trisomy chromosomal abnormalities.

Are there any other hospitals near you that you could change your booking to?

Howeverfar · 28/04/2026 17:35

They don't do nuchal fold screening in NI.

Yes the midwife booked my scan in after booking appointment.

Ah I completely understand. I had recurrent miscarriages before this pregnancy so had attended epau at 6 weeks. After that they urged me to refer. I was hesitant with all my other pregnancies and just couldn't bring myself to refer as I just expected something would go wrong

I suspect it probably is a capacity situation. The midwife did mention that my first scan may be at one of 3 hospitals, depending on where they can get me seen first. Just didnt expect it to be this late

It must be trust dependant. Ive never been offered testing in either of my pregnancies and im of advanced maternal age
