Nervous about morning sickness in first pregnancy, any reassuring experiences?

This is my first pregnancy and I’m so nervous about morning sickness. I’m 4 weeks and 4 days. I’ve had some symptoms such as always hungry (but no appetite !) - I get cold so easily and some cramping which is normal! But I’m dreading any sickness. Specially at work as I am required in the office currently. Anyone else feeling like this? Anyone previously had children and got any positive morning sickness stories haha! Or just tips to help stop/ ease sickness?

You might not get any morning sickness!
I had none with either of mine and have both boy and girl.
Fingers crossed!

I don’t have a positive story for you however my sickness started before 4 weeks so that’s maybe a good sign for you?

Tips I have gathered over the years:

  • eat little and often, lots of people feel sick when hungry so keep biscuits / crackers / snacks on hand
  • eat what you fancy, don’t try and force down a healthy smoothie or salad if you really want toast / chips / a burger. Lots of people crave carbs which is absolutely fine.
  • sleep as much as you can, I found sickness got worse when I was tired. I even had a duvet and pillow on my back seat of my car so I could nap in my first pregnancy at lunch time 🤣
  • if you do start to be sick avoid milk and aim for foods / drinks lighter on your stomach and will taste nice coming back up. Ice lollys are amazing for hydrating slowly and adding electrolytes
  • if it all gets a bit much, speak to your GP around safe anti sickness meds. Dont suffer if you don’t have too.

Id never understood how people could get to late term pregnancy without realising they are pregnant, but now I do!

I had zero pregnancy "symptoms" until my waters broke 🤣 i knew i was pregnant because I tested early as was actively TTC and required close monitoring because of my medical history, but felt great throughout. No nausea, no aches or pains, was at the gym regularly up until induction day. Didnt even look obviously pregnant, there were some customers at work who didn't realise I was pregnant, they thought I'd left when I went on maternity leave!

As others have said, you may be lucky and not get morning sickness. I had mild nausea for about 6 weeks (week 4 to week 10), never actually sick (never even close to bring sick) and nausea completely went at 10 weeks.

CarolinaLiar · 17/04/2026 06:50

I didn’t have sickness or nausea when pregnant. In fact, I’ve never felt better in my life.

WellConfusedandDazed · 17/04/2026 06:51

I didn’t have any sickness, you might not either. I was told to keep dry crackers handy.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 17/04/2026 06:53

I never had morning sickness only nausea once when I walked past a fish shop ….. but honestly I would rather go back in time and have nausea than high blood pressure , small baby growth and pre-eclampsia

ByNimbleGreenFinch · 17/04/2026 06:53

I didn’t have any morning sickness with any of my pregnancies. I felt tired and under the weather a lot but never sick!

Comtesse · 17/04/2026 07:04

I was sick once during 2 pregnancies and that was about dodgy food not morning sickness.

whatisforteamum · 17/04/2026 07:08

I didn't get morning sickness with my 2 only felt nauseous and tired.Luckily as I have emetophobia.
My daughter pregnant herself now has got to 13 weeks only feeling nauseous carrying on as normal.

Why are you worrying about something that either hasn’t happened yet or may not happen?

aLogLady · 17/04/2026 09:09

I had morning sickness lite! Lasted about 2-3 weeks and was very much background apart from a few times. Honestly I ttc so long I treasured it! It was some reassurance that my hcg was still increasing despite worrying symptoms. Fresh cold air was very nice. Mainly though it was strong aversions to things, which can be avoided. The smell of cooking food, soups, the fridge. Eat what your body says yes please to (mmm fresh fruit, tinned fruit, and cold orange juice were my havens!) Try not get worried about it, you might not get it at all, or have a light version like mine (which is very much the average experience) which for the most part was a novelty rather than a difficulty.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 17/04/2026 09:11

I only ever felt sick if I was hungry!

HelloDarknessmyoldfrenemy · 17/04/2026 11:02

I never felt any morning sickness during pregnancy. Don’t worry about something that might not even happen!

Superscientist · 17/04/2026 16:15

Don't fret see how things go you can't plan way or the other. Take each day as it comes.

I had 3 pregnancies with hyperemesis starting around 5 weeks and bed bound by 7 weeks.
4th pregnancy I didn't find out I was pregnant until 7 and a half weeks and didn't feel pregnant until 30 weeks when I developed liver issues.

The first pregnancy 2020- I couldn't work from home during the first trimester but I did the best I could making it into the office. Usually the sickness was worse between 10 and 3 which meant I got to the office ok and then had to wait it out until 4 o clock when I felt well enough to try and get back on the train home. Work were understanding and didn't question the amount of time I spent in the bathroom. I took days off as and when I needed. WFH was mandated due to the pandemic from the middle of my second trimester and that made things easier I could lie down when needed but still needed some days off. I worked up to 38+4 and baby arrived 2 days later

Pregnancy 2 summer 2024 only in the office 1-2 times a week tried to make it in but made myself unwell.

Pregnancy 3 autumn 2024 - my supervisor effectively banned me from the office until I felt up to going in. I ended up having 5 weeks off sick with hyperemesis and the miscarriage. Combined with the WFH and Christmas I didn't go to the office between mid October and the start of January.

Pregnancy 4 2025 I was no longer in work but would have been fine working until I developed complications and would have had to stop work at 30-32 weeks as I became unwell

Morning sickness isn't always a guarantee. My mother had it for 3 months with me and 4 months with my brother hers was just nausea though.

I had it for 1 month and at it's peak I was vomiting 5 times a day, at least until 1pm. I was at a really misogynistic firm so by that point I didn't give no F's and would just hurl in the waste paper basket in front of everyone especially when Alex would bring FISH into the office, fuck that guy in particular.

It does fade I'm on week 20 now and maybe I'm sick once a month, usually brought about by smells.

Best piece of advice I can give if you get it is nibble. I know it sounds counterintuitive but having a little bit of yoghurt or a few crackers does hush it up. Also drink LOTS of water. I cannot stress this enough. It really helps especially if you have vomiting like me it's a lot easier to get up water than food.

OotontheRandan · 17/04/2026 18:01

You may not get morning sickness, or of you do it really may not be that bad.

I felt seasick, but never vomited. Nausea that was worse if I was hungry or in a moving vehicle. I kept a stack of dry crackers in a bag at all times.

But I did get horrific heartburn (and drank gaviscon straight out the bottle).

I remember with DC1 I relied heavily on strawberry milk for a big part of my first trimester. And then went off it and 15 years later still can't eat it. I had a massive craving for cold water with DC2 and that helped calm both the nausea and heartburn.

You'll find a way through and figure out if something makes you feel sick or helps ease it.

If things do get bad, speak to the midwife (or GP if not booked in) ASAP and you can get medication. My SIL had to for DC3 and it helped her a huge amount.

Good luck, this is the start of an exciting time!
