Tumble dryer with 2 under 3 — worth it?

Need honest opinions, should I invest in a tumble dryer?

I’ve never really liked tumble dryers and always preferred air drying but I have a 2-year-old and I’m due my second baby in October and I’m starting to wonder if keeping up with laundry will become impossible 😅

Did getting a tumble dryer make a big difference for you or is it not worth it?

Yes! Fluffy towels and no faffing with socks and undies.

I've never had one and never wanted one, even when I had small children. But if it'll make life easier then fair enough I guess!

Get a heated airer instead, tumble dryers arent great for your clothes. We’ve never had one, never even thought it was an issue.

Look at a heat pump dryer - loads more economical to run (but more expensive to buy initially). They don't get as hot and are kinder to clothes... I run it all year round... It even sends me a notification to my phone when it's finished. I love it ♥️

I was going to say - yes yes yes but don’t get a heat pump one, we had a tumble drier for 11 years and just replaced it for a heat pump one and it’s my biggest regret, as it takes so much longer to dry anything. On the plus side we are barely using it as I it takes so long.

Yes. Once my first DC was born, I wouldn't be without a tumble drier. I do line dry in the summer, but still pop towels /jeans in for a few minutes to get rid of that line dried 'carboard' feel.

Couldn't live without a dryer (I have 3 children) also how do you dry towels without them feeling like ryvita? We'd have terrible damp problems in our house the volume of washing we do. I do own 2 massive clothes horses too and put them in our south facing conservatory (for stuff that can't be cooked in the dryer) in winter it takes days to dry. I'm not sure how anyone would manage without one with multiple children? It's the one appliance I'd struggle to live without, along with the huge drum washer I have! Wow I sound dull 🤣. We have a beko condenser dryer, it hasn't stopped for 9+ years and is still going strong, was only £200 at the time, just looked they are £250 now for one like ours.

Honestly you don’t know what you are missing out on. I don’t know how I’d have got through the baby/toddler years without one, even now I’m
still going at least 2 loads of tumble drying a week.

Nofeckingway · 13/04/2026 21:08

My tumbler dryer is coming up to 30 years old ! I was visiting my parents with toddler and 6 month old baby when DH rang up and mentioned the dryer had broke . I told him to have a new one in place before I came back . He got a much more expensive one that I would have but it is brilliant. He repaired the door handle once but apart from that it's kept going including several house moves . That baby will be 30 next month .

We have a terrible washer dryer and I am drowning in laundry constantly. Im so desperate that im contemplating sticking a vented dryer in the corner of the dining room - thank goodness the weather is at least getting better now for outside drying. If you've got room for one, then go for it!

WittyJadeStork · 13/04/2026 21:12

Get one that does low heat as well so it doesn’t shrink everything. I mainly use mine for bedding and towels.
Edited to add if you have a smart meter and time of use tariff get one with a timer so you can set it to come on with the cheaper electricity

TalulahJP · 13/04/2026 21:24

Re them being dear to run, you can use them to part dry things and then hang them on the clothes horse or radiators overnight to finish them off, best of both worlds.

i got an over-the-door clothes horse in aldi last year and it’s been really good. With it being high up little hands wouldnt be able to reach it, just hang things on the higher rails.

toddlermom1 · 13/04/2026 21:39

Love mine … use it almost daily and if it stopped working tomorrow it would be replaced before the end of the day!! It helps with the our laundry especially with kids so much
