Hi
feeling pangs of guilt at the moment I am 22 weeks pg and normally (ie when not pregnant) have a healthy diet.

I seem to be gorging on crisps/sweets (perhaps 2 packets of crisps a day and I am eating sucking sweets most of the day to keep nausea at bay) and we are averaging about 1 takeaway a week. also I am drinking more fizzy drinks

i am trying to cut down but my body just seems to be craving cr*p stodgy foods.

Feeling lke I maybe harming baby and I am feeling vv guilty about it.

Oh my diet is horrendous at the moment too and ive felt so so guilty. macdonalds and chips have never tasted so good although i try to have normal meals about three-four times a week. Its hard, i dont fancy vegetables at all and had major cravings for sweet stuff like haribo and strawberry icecream. it has worried me but my DH reminded me that is not alchohol or crack!

bethoo · 19/06/2008 12:19

dont worry bu 10 thsi morning i had consumed a dime bar, a crunchie and a dairy milk, not forgetting the cold meatballs dipped in mayo! i am 24 weeks!

I'm trying to eat more healthily this week after weeks of hideous mornigngsickness meant I ate nothing, then a few weeks of feeling better meant I ate whatever I fancied - cake, crisps, chips, lucozade and biccies all day long! (I was just so glad to be able to eat!). I agree with what others have said...unless your diet is really hideous or you aren't eating enough, it's unlikely to affect your baby. It's you who loses out on nutrients during pregnancy because all the good stuff gets taken by your baby. Eating healthily will give you more energy, that's the main reason I'd give you for trying to make sure you eat well. Don't completely deprive yourself, though. If you're starving, it's for a reason. Your body is working hard and needs fuel.

Only thing I will say that is a bit harsh but has to be said (from bitter experience!) is that you are pregnant for 9 for that period of time - even just a few hundred more than you need each day (that's a packet of crisps and a choccie bar easily) - you will put on excess weight. I ate what I fancied in my first pregnancy and put on more than 4 stone which wasn't easy to shift.

MrsMattie · 19/06/2008 12:43

should say 'for 9 months in last paragraph!

MrsMattie · 19/06/2008 12:44

Sorry that was completely garbled! meant to say you'r epreg for 9 months and if you eat more calories than you need each day for that period of time - you will put on more than just 'baby weight'.

WheresTheAuPair · 19/06/2008 12:49

its really strange isn't it- normally i'm really healthy (ith the exception of wine post toddler bedtime) but i'm 22 weeks PG aswell and would happily eat stodge all day!
I put on 4 stone with my last PG to a v.healthy boy- lost pretty much all of the weight afterwards (give or take the last few pounds) and now looks like i'm set to put on another 4 stone with this one!!

I'm gutted to report that the only food I've gone off is takeaways!! That seems really unfair, especially as I'm going through a tired phase as the moment and can rarely be bothered to cook (I thought that was supposed to stop after 3 months - not start??)

am i just a complete freak. i've had no problem maintaining a healthy eating diet and although for a couple of weeks i found exercise difficult, i kept going and only had to change my running to stationary bike for 40 minutes, 4 days a week. junk food smells terrible to me. the thought of eating any fast food before was vile, but now i wretch when i walk by a place and it's all i can smell.

one reason people tend to overeat junk food is that it doesn't satisfy the appetite, some hormone, don't remember what it is and you tend to overeat. my only worry is the amount you eat. i think people feel they may be eating more than they really are. a couple of servings a day, provided you are overall eating and exercising, shouldn't be a problem. if you are eating more junk food, including fast food, processed food, than normal food, you might want to curb that. baking your own goodies is great because you control what goes into it... i've made my own crisps many times. baked.

don't forget to drink lots of water, it's great for flushing toxins after a junk food binge.

My diet has been crap also. Probably worse than the OP's. I am constantly starving and all I want is sweeties, chips and mcdonalds.

disneystar · 21/06/2008 09:03

bealcain · 21/06/2008 10:45

my diet is currently iron syrup, orange juice and plenty of ice to crunch. mingled with lots of cereal and toast.

Buckets · 21/06/2008 16:35

Oh man, if you're still suffering with nausea you are allowed to eat anything - whatever it takes to get you through the day!Really and truly.

This baby has demanded a fry-up every fortnight since the day after conception and a cream-filled Belgian bun weekly, bakery stock permitting. I hardly ever eat cake when not pg and certainly not fresh cream cakes - think it's because this is a boy. My last was a boy too and he made me go back for seconds of Xmas pud before his birth - I HATE Xmas pud! My DD just made me crave lemony things and taramasalata.
