IVF = early induction?

If you were an IVF Mum, were you induced pre-40 weeks? I’m only 5+5 but would like to understand if that’s the norm or depends on personal situations and perhaps which trust you’re under?

@sunshinebelieve
place marking as I’m also curious about this.

PaperAirplanesFlying · 26/03/2026 14:36

It depends where you are. Where I am if you’ve had an IVF pregnancy you get growth scans and are offered induction at 39 weeks, but a friend of mine who lives in a different area had an IVF pregnancy and didn’t have extra scans or an induction.

Bobbie12345678 · 26/03/2026 14:42

My experience was that once you were pregnant it became irrelevant how you got there and the pregnancy was treated as normal.

Puggymummy19 · 26/03/2026 18:20

Nope! I requested one at 41 weeks if needed. But luckily gave birth at 40+4

sunshinebelieve · 27/03/2026 10:37

A bit of a mixed bag of then!

I'm 23 weeks and at my 20 week scan we saw a consultant, his explanation was that after 40 weeks the placenta deteriorates quick, I think there's research that suggests otherwise but me personally will not being taking any risks! We've been offered a elected section at 39 weeks or induction before due date, I'm still yet to decide which route to go down! I will also be having growth scans from 28 weeks xx

LemonDrizzle44 · 27/03/2026 15:38

My due date was brought forward by 5 days at my 12 week scan even though dates are more accurate with ivf pregnancies. I requested an induction at 40+5 which was my ivf due date which was granted by the consultant due to “anxiety “.
It all changed anyway as he was measuring big and I ended up being induced at 39+4

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2026 15:39

Yes. They didn’t want me to go 40/40

induced me 39.4. Took 3 days. Sure mini blondes wanted to be a 42 week er

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2026 15:41

As in if over 40yrs they don’t want you to go over 40w due to risk of placenta coming away

which in my case it did and floor looked like horror scene. It was blue and remember looking at it thinking why is it red

i had baby. She was given to dh and I was rushed to surgery

literally had my womb scraped out

3 blood transfusions later

sunshinebelieve · 27/03/2026 16:33

@feelingsuperlucky is the placenta deterioration for all pregnancies or specifically ivf ones? I don’t blame you for not wanting to take any chances. Wishing you the very best with the rest of your pregnancy & whichever way you decide to deliver.

@LemonDrizzle44 that’s interesting that the dates can still be adjusted even when ivf dates are so certain. Was baby actually big in the end?

@Blondeshavemorefun wow, how scary that must have been. Mini blonde was definitely very comfy in there!

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2026 16:46

It’s generally more for ivf due to the drugs

or else they would always induce by 40w and they leave up to 42

but again if 42w it’s a higher risk of breaking away

if younger than not so much of an issue. How old are you @sunshinebelieve.

i was almost 44 when gave birth

they kept saying my dates were wrong and I said as ivf I knew excatly when planted 12 July 2016 and embryo was 5 days old

tbh I don’t rem much and felt more for dh as he was literally left holding th baby while all the staff whisked me away

feelingsuperlucky · 27/03/2026 16:51

@sunshinebelieve I believe all pregnancies do slowly but IVF tend to faster! X

LemonDrizzle44 · 27/03/2026 16:54

@sunshinebelieveusually hospitals stick with IVF dates but for some reason mine didn’t. He was predicted nearly 10lb (97th centile) but was born 7lb 8oz (50th centile) so scans not accurate at all.

TwiceTwoDouble · 27/03/2026 17:00

I was induced but only because it was twins and I’d got to 38.6 and had two huge babies.

sunshinebelieve · 27/03/2026 17:43

@Blondeshavemorefun I’ll be 39 when I give birth, so in the ‘advanced maternal age’ category but not over 40.

@feelingsuperlucky that’s really interesting to know, thank you.

@LemonDrizzle44thats a huge over estimation of weight then! Bet you were glad they weren’t 10 pounders!

@TwiceTwoDoublethats a great point to get to with twins!

I was induced at 39 weeks, (aged 39 if that’s relevant). The placenta deterioration was the reason given by the consultant, it was standard to be consultant lead for IVF in my trust. I had a very easy pregnancy physically, but did have reduced fluid around baby, picked up from an extra scan as my bump wasn’t growing as expected. More than normal for IVF scans following that. Induction took 4 days during lockdown 1, that was fun, NOT!!

sunshinebelieve · 27/03/2026 19:01

@Mummyslittlegiraffe 4 DAYS?! 😱 you poor thing!

OP posts:
Okdaisy · 27/03/2026 19:03

I had growth scans due to ivf which showed baby measuring big so was induced at 39 weeks

TheIceBear · 27/03/2026 20:06

They told me they wouldn’t let me go past my due date so I was induced on my due date

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2026 20:58

I thought 3 was bad enough @Mummyslittlegiraffe

as consultant led due to my age I had scans every 3w which was very reassuring

how peopl cope with 12w and 20w and nothing else is beyond me

plus I paid for private scans at 6w and the 4d ones at think 28w

was told having a 10lb baby. She was 7.3 which was hard enough to push out

another 3lbs so almost another half a baby would have finished me off !

so they do get weights quite wrong !

Goldpanther · 27/03/2026 21:21

IVF pregnancy, no other risk factors.

I was heavily pressured into having an induction from 38 weeks. However I refused as it isn't in the NICE guidelines and the consultant couldn't give me a clear reason for needing to be induced. If I had other risk factors I might have considered it.

Had a spontaneous birth at 39+6.

Definitely take time to make a decision and plan what you might do, I said I was open to induction at 41 weeks, but giving my DS a chance to come in his own time and experience a spontaneous birth was important to me.

VioIetMoon · 27/03/2026 22:09

I was induced at 38 weeks. I was told they dont like to let you go to due date with ivf pregnancies as it increases risk to baby

magpie234 · 30/03/2026 16:22

I was told they would want baby out by 40 weeks due to ivf. I wanted a c-section anyway so am booked in for 39+5.

magpie234 · Today 10:41

Mine told me they would want baby out by 40 weeks. I wanted a c-section from the off anyway (booked for two days’ time!) but otherwise they would have wanted to induce. It’s because the placenta can deteriorate faster in an ivf pregnancy apparently, plus potential other reasons/think they want to play it safe. But you should absolutely ask for medical evidence for your case if you’re not happy with that!

Latenightreader · Today 10:50

I was heavily pressured to have an induction at 39 weeks with my ivf baby but they couldn't give me a good reason and I eventually agreed to be induced on my due date. I ended up going into spontaneous labour, and ended up having induction meds as things were going slowly. Baby was born on her due date after three and a bit days in labour...
