Trying to conceive with hyperthyroidism and suppressed TSH on PTU

Hello, my first post here but often have a read of other posts and am struggling to find some answers!

Wondering if anyone has any experience with overactive thyroid/Graves’ disease and TTC.

I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid in December, discovered after I asked for blood tests due to 2 miscarriages (I already have one child, no problems to conceive)… started 100mg PTU in January and less than 2 weeks later my T3 and T4 normalised but TSH still suppressed at <0.05. Dropped to 50mg PTU and still on that now. TRAb came back negative but consultant has ordered a scan to see if Graves’ disease or benign nodules as if it was just transient thyroiditis she would expect TSH increase by now or dipped into hypo. TSH still remains suppressed. (had most recent bloods Thursday just gone, just waiting for results) and scan is on Tuesday 31st. I’m thinking of waiting until after my scan and then maybe TTC anyway as my levels apart from TSH have been normal since January. Anyone got any experience TTC with hyperthyroidism? As I said I’m still not sure if it is Graves’ disease yet!

thank you! X

Probably not want you want to hear, but until my thyroid was removed and I was fully stable on meds I had no success. Took years for me to have my first, but I did have surgical complications and am now pregnant with my second. I was told whilst my TSH was suppressed I had a less than 1% chance of getting pregnant

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease September 2022. Have been in remission for over 2 years and found out we were pregnant in January (unplanned). I was never given any warnings about TTC just strictly NOT to get pregnant or try whilst on medications, and never told that the odds were low so I’m sorry I can’t help with your current situation.

What I want to share (to see if it helps you on your journey at all) is the complications I’m now facing.

My Endocrinologist has just told me that I should have been having 4 weekly bloods throughout my pregnancy and I am now 19 weeks having only had 1 (despite my requests to Midwife and GP - everyone advised “wait to see consultant”) so firstly he apologised for that. Secondly, he apologised that my booking bloods that included the thyroid test showed an extreme raise, likely due to activation from the pregnancy. I didn’t know about this and was never contacted, it’s been left untreated since 10th Feb and I’m waiting for results of urgent repeat bloods now.

His concern was whilst some medications can be given in the first trimester to help, there are high risks for the baby and now I’m in second trimester, if they return abnormal my only choice is to have my thyroid removed ASAP! Very shocking news to me and something I was unaware of and hadn’t been given information about before hand so please make sure your care providers inform you about everything and every stage - and that they look after you!
