...what does this mean?

I mean, of course I know that the baby's head is three fifths engaged but what I'm saying is, does this mean I'll be early?

I'm assuming I shouldnt be concerned since Midwife has booked me in in another 3 weeks to see her....surely, If labour was due sooner she'd had wanted to see me sooner?

This is first pregnancy.Any experience of this would be great.

Sorry can't help, am 37 weeks and not engaged. I'm worrying the other way! Hope someone more knowledgable comes along soon.

Well, you're in luck. I'm told that the other way to me (i.e not engaged) up to 38 weeks is perfectly normal. In fact, some women don't engage until Labour is active ....

Thanks. doesn't help you much does it. If your worried give her a call and ask her to clarify what she said, thats what they are there for after all. Hope you get an answer soon

My first baby engaged around 34 weeks, born at 40 weeks.

My second baby engaged at 35-36 weeks, born at 41 weeks.

I would try not to worry, it doesn't necessarily mean very much.

Pretty sure that engaged 3/5 at 32 weeks is good healthy sign. Mine both engaged at this stage but moved out of this position at later stages of pregnancy. Born at 43 and 39 weeks.

Thanks for responses. I mean, I know that if baby comes earlier, it has a fair chance but I'm just old fashioned in the sense that the longer it stays in, the better....

My midwife also said she'd like to see me stop work around 34 weeks, in 2 weeks time - is that normal? I was going to go on until 37 weeks...

Did your midwife give any reason for you to stop work earlier than you planned? For instance, do you have a physical job, or do you have any symptoms (such as high blood pressure) that she may hope would improve once you go on maternity leave?

It is a good idea to get plenty of rest before labour, and as 37 weeks is technically full-term, she may be saying that you need to stop earlier just to make sure you are well rested once the baby arrives.

cmotdibbler · 18/06/2008 15:14

Mine wasn't engaged at 34 weeks, and he arrived at 35 weeks, so don't think it makes any difference.

I'd planned to finish at 38 weeks, but midwives were funny about that - I think its just a standard thing. To me, being at work in an air conditioned office was better than just sitting at home. And apart from having to call work on the Monday morning to cancel some meetings on account of having had a baby, not having any time off before the birth was no trouble at all. Why waste all 6 weeks of proper pay on sitting around doing nothing buy waiting imo.

BigBadMouse · 18/06/2008 15:24

I was fully engaged at 32 weeks with DD1 (born on due date) and by 34 weeks with DD2 (born a week early) DS didn't engage until I was well into labour and was born 10 days late (third babies always awkward apparently)

I worked up until 3 days before my due date with DD1 - MWs weren't happy about that but I was - didn't want to be sitting around waiting for something to happen. I would have done the same with DD2 given the chance.

sweetkitty · 18/06/2008 15:27

I'm 37 weeks with my third whose not engaged BUT I have never had a baby engage before labour.

DD1 was 37+5 DD2 41+5, DD2 didn't engage until my waters were broken 10 mins before she was born.

My labours were 4h and 2 1/2 hours so them not engaging wasn't a problem.
