My bmi is currently 33 and my recent bloods said my hba1c was 51.
Im reading this means I require higher folic acid.
Im currently 5 weeks and have been taking 600 daily , and apparently the advice is 5mg. I spoke to my gp, she didnt seem bothered, couldn't wait to get me off the phone. She said she didnt know but would probably do no harm anyway and prescribed 5mg however im still waiting on prescription from them to be received at pharmacy.
Any ladies been in a similar situation?
I suppose im concerned that I wasnt aware of this before and since im already 5 weeks past , ive read ntd are likely to have already occurred by 5-6 weeks.
Has anyone in the situation had any advice from their midwife?
Did anyone not take the higher dose required and everything was ok? I suppose im worrying myself now

I was never given the prescription for higher dose folic acid until after my booking appointment at 8 weeks. Were you already taking folic acid prior to conception? That will have helped build up a "store" so to speak for baby to draw from. Eating fruit and vegetables and fortified cereals will have helped. Probably some flour manufacturers will have gotten ahead of the game and already have added folic acid to their flour prior to enforcement in December.

Either way, both my kids were born healthy with no neural tube defects. I recommend the vitamin D sprays for extra supplementation. One less pill to take anyway.

@StarsShiningOnANighttimeSea That's reassuring to hear. Prior to conception, I was just taking the standard 400ug , then switched to a prenatal with 600ug last week. I hadn't realised my higher bmi and blood sugars meant that dose was insufficient. I did speak to gp the week prior and she was aware of my info and that im ttc as she's referred me to recurrent miscarriage clinic when I found out im pregnant now again but she never mentioned that I should start a higher dose before conception, which i thought was odd since its mentioned on NHS website .
