Unsure on amniocentesis (bilateral talipes)

Hi all

at our 20 week scan the sonographer flagged suspected structural bilateral talipes and we were sent to fetal medicine for another scan.

the consultant at that scan had a detailed look and said he was fairly certain it was positional talipes only - so no need for amniocentesis to check for other genetic conditions usually associated with structural talipes. He booked us in for a final scan just to be 100% sure.

that scan was with another consultant who said she thinks it IS structural talipes.

Obviously due to the difference of opinion we weren’t confident going in for an amniocentesis there and then and asked for a further scan to check again, which is next week with the first consultant.

Keen to understand if anyone has had a similar experience with uncertainty around talipes diagnosis and how that impacted decisions around having the amniocentesis. Any help appreciated!

Would you abort if a genetic condition was found? If not, I would ask to wait until 34 weeks.

Thanks for your reply @Lougle - we think if something incompatible with life was discovered we would consider termination, so just trying to carefully weigh up the risks vs risk of miscarriage from the amnio

Is a NIPT an option? I appreciate this will depend on what conditions are being tested for, but it is non invasive. We had a similar issue with an anomaly found at 20 weeks and paid privately for a NIPT prior to making a decision on the amino due to the risks involved.

@HeyBulldog thanks for your reply, we had a private NIPT which came back clear but were still recommended to do the amnio due to the increased risks associated with talipes. We’ve gone ahead now so fingers crossed!
