I like my ear thermometer, think it's braun but I have a feeling with babies you can only take their temp a certain way... shall try and google it, but if you can i'd go for the ear - it's alot nicer and very quick.

I've got two children and have never had a thermometer. In my opinion they can panic/lull you into a false sense of security. An child with a high temperature can be only mildly ill or seriously ill with only a slightly raised one. Go by touch and observation - you can tell if a child is ill without a thermometer.

Def the in ear version. It takes (seemingly) ages for the temp to register on the non-ear thermometers which is a nightmare with a wriggling screaming baby/toddler. I had one - then after the first middle of the night high temp scare, I went out and bought an ear version!! Much much nicer for everyone.

The ear one - expensive but very good

A baby or toddler won't take kindly to having it shoved up the bum or in the mouth I think you'll find...

I found the ear one hard to use as I always get different readings if I measure twice in a row. Maybe I'm rubbish at it.
BUT, taking the temperature in the bum is not easy once the child is over a few months old.

as a mum you will know if your baby/child is hot (ie has a temperature) or not. it doesn't really matter how high. so I agree with seeker. it only raises anxiety, and there are better ways to assess if your child is ill (poor feeding, lethargy, sleeping a lot, grunting etc). Cass

The Braun Thermoscan ear one is great. We had to take our DS to an out of hours doctor a few weeks back (he had tonsilitis) and she was using it as well so must be pretty good.

slinkiemalinki · 16/06/2008 17:23

Braun ear one very good. Was always told myself that touch tests were not reliable and the couple of times my DD has been to the doctor's they have always asked if she had a temp (and also checked it themselves with a thermometer). So I wouldn't go without myself.

Why do you need to know what a child's temperature is? Unless your child is one of the very rare ones who has febrile comvulsions? And even they - you KNOW if a baby is too hot.
