Good grief don't buy all that!

Unless you have no friends or family or neighbours or vague acquaintances. You'd be surprised how many people buy you stuff for a first baby. I got things from my acquaintance's elderly mother who I'd never even met!

I would buy what you need for the first two weeks of the baby's life. Then wait for the gifts to pile in.

10 vests
10 baby grows
1 cardigan
1 scratch mitts
1 hat
2 cellular blankets for swaddling
6 muslins

That'll do nicely, assuming your baby is due in July time and you're in the UK.

What she said.

Do not buy that much stuff.

My daughter born in June spent most of her time in a nappy out was so hot and she didn't wear hardly any of the many many clothes we were gifted, and they went to a charity shop. Much better to buy what you need when, then stocking up and it going to waste

APatternGrammar · 21/02/2026 15:02

I had 14 bodies, 14 babygros in the sizes up to 6 months and a hat or two.

Coconutter24 · 21/02/2026 15:05

You do look short on baby grows and short sleeved body suits.

suziequeue1 · 21/02/2026 15:07

Hi all thanks for replying

Just to clarify the “what I have” is mostly stuff that’s been gifted to us by my family and the basics are stuff I bought. I was mainly asking if the “what I need” part is fine

Agree, buy some body suits/sleep suits and something warm to take baby home in. Don’t worry about the rest. And yes don’t buy too far ahead as you may not find out until baby is here what your preferences are for how to dress them.

I got a wide variety of things for free - so much lovely stuff secondhand. But I hardly used any of it - I found a brand I liked (turned out to be Next) and I just kept babying sleepsuits for first few months. After 4 months she was more comfortable in tops and tights. Her legs were so chunky she didn’t fit in some of the clothes I’d been given so I ended up buying them on vinted anyway. Most of what I used was things I bought as I went, not the stuff ahead of time. I had baby clothes for a year and advance and I forgot I had it or where I put it and ended up buying different things I wanted when the time came anyway.

Mum38383 · 21/02/2026 15:16

Sorry cross posted. Your what I need list looks fine. I would just hold off on buying 3-6m stuff. Maybe also consider a stretchy wrap sling and practice before baby is here.

Baby carrier is on my baby wishlist if that’s what you mean but thank you for the suggestion

I think im just scared of SMP haha and worried I’ll struggle when baby is here which is why im trying to get everything I need while I’m still earning a solid wage!

I bought every stitch mine wore for the first year (supplemented with gifts once he was born) without knowing what sex I was having. I didn't want the expense while I was on mat leave as I only got the basic level. I bought 'nice' bits in the sales and stocked up on cheap basics and secondhand bundles.

It can get a bit a complex to work out what size you will need for seasonal items as at 6 months old they could be in 3-6 month stuff or 9-12 month without being particularly tiny or huge. Just don't go wild with quantities. I'd had all the horror stories of babies needing 4+ outfits every day as they will be sick/ have nappy accidents but I rarely had to change mine in the day so one 'day' out fit and a change for bedtime meant 2 vests, 2 body suits and a cardigan/ hat if the weather warranted it did us most days. My sister's refluxy babies were changed much more often as they were usually sick on what they were wearing.
Buying ahead for the first year meant I could continue to pick up sales stuff for the year ahead and did so until DS was school age so I never had to dash out and buy a whole new size worth of stuff just plug any gaps.

APatternGrammar · 21/02/2026 15:53

If you are short on cash you can buy amazing bundles on Vinted. But buying full price new clothes in advance without knowing the size is risky. Some babies go straight into large sizes, whereas my full term child wore premie sizes for a month. You also don’t know exactly when they will change sizes so you can’t predict when you’ll need short sleeves.

loryN22 · 21/02/2026 16:37

That is a massive list for the first few months. I had way too many newborn outfits and my kid outgrew them in like two weeks, so maybe don't buy any more of that size. Focus on the 3-6 month stuff instead.

mondaytosunday · 21/02/2026 16:57

My baby born in July basically lived in onesies (short sleeves no legs as I’m confused what people consider a onesie), had a sleeping bag overnight. Plus he went pretty much straight into 3 months age (was over 10lbs at birth). As it got a bit cooler he went into onesies with long sleeves and feet (like a sleep suit). Socks are useless - cute but they don’t stay on. I actually didn’t get many clothing gifts (I got some cracking clothes for my DD though, including a Baby Dior dress)! I can’t remember when he started wearing proper outfits - probably not til he was 3/4 months old.

toastofthetown · 21/02/2026 16:58

One size you’re missing is 0-1 month. 0-3 months is huge and it bridges the gap nicely especially for footed sleepsuits. I wouldn’t buy too much in bigger sizes because you’ll figure out what you do and don’t like in clothing as you go. Like I see people raving about the wrap around vests, but I found it easier to pull on over the head than deal with all those poppers so I’m glad I had a mix.

If you’re due in July I wouldn’t worry about long sleeve vests. You might want some short rompers but you can buy those if it’s warm and leave it if not. Similar to snow suits, wouldn’t buy seasonal clothes until you roughly know their size. One piece of advice I got is that the shops don’t close after the baby is born, so you don’t need to buy everything in advance.

For a summer baby I’d get 5-10 newborn sleepsuits, 5-10 newborn short sleeved vests, 5-10 0-1 month sleepsuits, 5-10 0-1 month vests, a couple of cute outfits if you want, socks if some of your outfits don’t have feet, 10 muslins, a couple of hats, and some cardigans.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 21/02/2026 17:07

you do not know what size your baby will be when born.

Mine was early ! so all / any new born was too big and we were searching for tiny.

when she did grow it wasn't in proportion, so 3-6 months top but long legs so 6-9 months for the legs etc.

and yes to socks ! perfect gift from next door neighbour !!! so useful !

Babyboomtastic · 21/02/2026 17:07

I can see the urge to buy in advance, but it's difficult to know what you'll need. Neither of mine were sicky, and rarely needed a spare outfit. But some would go through half a dozen a day. Saying that, with my second I packed five sleep suits in my hospital bag, and she got through 3 in the last 2 hours!

You might need more small sizes, more in big sizes, you might have a heatwave, or unseasonably cold weather. Take 6 to 9 months clothing, for example. If your baby grows at an average rate, then those will probably be winter clothes. If you have a large, fast growing baby, they could be in them at 3 months. Equally one of mine was in 6-9 between 12-18m, and it needed to be suitable for a toddler. The same child wore newborn for 3 months.

But buying baby clothes is one of the nicest bits of having a baby, so shop for things you like, and you'll fill in the missing gaps later.

Peonyperfection · 21/02/2026 19:33

If you want to spread the cost you could buy gift cards (make the most of cashback as well, something like top cash back) add on a favourite one for yourself for when you’re up in the night feeding and need a little treat x

gototogo · 21/02/2026 19:38

Don’t buy all of that ahead of time! You have plenty to start you off, only once baby is born will you know if you need more newborn size (or preemie size, I did!) or you need bigger sizes quicker, when you will need summer clothes thus will alter too. A dozen muslins is essential though. As to the sleeping bags, personally I’d only buy one initially suitable for the temperature it is at due date, a cellular blanket is useful in case of colder temperatures

LER2023 · 22/02/2026 08:27

Just a heads up, if your baby is born July time you do not need a 3.5 tog sleeping bag. That is far too hot.
My baby was born in november. We started with a vest, sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog. He is now 3 month old and just wears a sleepsuit and has a blanket.
If you have your heating set to the perfect temperature all the time you wont need as much.

Also skip the newborn clothes.
Baby wont wear them for long if at all.

Mine was 7 pound 4 and never fit in newborn clothes.

I always just stuck to the 5 rule.
5 days of clothes with a wash in between.
5 vests, 5 sleepsuits, 5 socks, 5 hats, 5 mits (although baby didnt wear mits until he was around 6 week old even then it was seldom they dont do much. His hands were always cold even with them on and he never scratched his face until recently)
5 changes of clothes in the day (if your putting baby in clothes during the day) i didnt for some weeks and then when i went to register him i was given the advice to get him ready in a morning because he will then get used to being up and ready and then get him ready for bed, creating expectation that its bedtime, as daft as that sounds wow its true. He started getting into the routine of pjs and bed around 5/6 week old. He used to cry if it went dark outside and he didnt have a sleepsuit on😂😂

Surprisingly babies are smarter than they look.

If you have things like snowsuits/pramsuits make sure that theyre a bigger size. They wont need a snowsuit in july, also when would anyone plan on taking a baby out in the snow?

Again my baby was born in November and if the weather was THAT bad i just couldnt justify leaving a nice warm cosy house to go out in the cold. Its still the same ruling now and we try to get out for a walk almost every day in the pram. Its good for me and him, however i dont want to be out in the pissing down rain or snow. Why would i want my baby to be out in it.

You'll never know what size you need because babies grow SO quick. My baby was in 3 - 6 months at 9 week old and he was on the 25th percentile, although he ate and ate and ate, he had reflux so he didnt keep putting the weight on so quick. He probably would have been in 3 - 6 sooner if he did put the weight on.

I understand how difficult it is on mat leave and losing out on so much money. Just dont buy silly things that you'll not use. Eg. Long sleeve bodysuits, snowsuit ect.

You can apply for child benefit. Yes its £104 a month but that £104 can get you some lovely bundles on vinted as well as nappies and wipes, milk if your forumla feeding.

Nappies and wipes look at amazon for bulk. I buy size 2 nappies in rascals from amazon, i get 4 packs for just over £20 and wipes i get a box of 15, 80 wipe packs for £17 on subscribe and save.
Milk is £10.50 (for me, as hes on cow and gate, my milk wasnt filling my baby)
Thats just under £50. You can get £50 worth of lovely clothes on vinted when you need them.

I made the mistake in buying stuff early. Hates majority of it and still ended up going out and buying more clothes from matalan.

Home bargains so white baby vests for £5, set of 5.
Matalan usually have a baby event on where things are on sale or you get x % off.
You dont need high end clothes, they arent going to be doing anything that requires expensive clothes, just something to put on their back to keep them warm and cosy.

I hope this helps and congratulations on your little bean x

Babies are weird. My 'small' baby was 7lbs, so only 4oz smaller than yours who didn't fit in newborn clothing. Neither did mine, but that's because she needed early baby/premature clothes. I think I grow dense babies that are heavy but small 😜

Why will your baby be wearing woolly hat and gloves in July? Are you in Southern Hemisphere?
