Inconclusive scan at 6 weeks 5 days

I'm looking for any experiences good and bad. Went for a scan today at 6+5, gestational sac and yolk sac visualised but no embryo. I'm certain on my dates and know I ovulated cd14 from tracking OPKs and BBT. The sonographer was awful and so cold, we've got to wait for a rescan in two weeks. I actually don't know how I can bear it. I had a MMC in August last year and can't believe the same thing is happening again. Is there any hope? Has anyone had a heartbeat miraculously appear? I just think it's so unlikely given gestational age and my certainty about dates 😞

Sorry to hear the sonographer was so cold :( that doesn’t help matters. I had the exact same, 6+5 and sure of my dates. I knew it wasn’t good, but did find some hopeful stories in many hours of trawling the internet. But mine did end in mmc at 10 weeks. Sorry you’re going through this, I know how worrying it is.

Thank you for replying ❤️ it's so awful, the next scan they could give me was not till March which feels like an unbearable wait. I'm considering going to a walk in EPU at the weekend at another hospital but I'm not sure that will offer me any more conclusive answers. I just know it's bad news and I wish I could start the ball rolling on managing it now rather than having to wait 😔

You can be completely sure of your dates, but that doesn’t mean the embryo will grow along a perfect linear line of growth. There’s unfortunately nothing to say you should be exactly any gestation currently, but you have some really positive signs from your scan that you have a viable pregnancy developing. So definitely try and enjoy knowing you’re pregnant at the moment.

am316 · 18/02/2026 22:47

Oh you really think so? I feel very far from enjoying anything at the moment it's an awful feeling. This will be my 4th miscarriage so I feel pretty resigned to it at this point

I was completely totally sure of dates (IVF) and still measured 3 days too small.

my clinic wouldn’t scan anyone before 7 weeks as they don’t always see heartbeat etc. and that’s an IVF clinic when they know exactly how pregnant you are!

And ovulation tracking etc. is good but of course nothing is 100%. On one random month your body can do something weird.
especially if you ovulated twice, the second one could mean a “younger” embryo and also may not show up the same on tracking methods xx

That's reassuring! Being in limbo waiting is horrible. Part of me doesn't want to be hopeful as it will just make the loss that much more crushing if/when it happens. I think I'm just doubtful because I was 6+5...maybe if I was a few days earlier I could allow myself to hope but this seems too late to not be seeing anything. I'm going to go for a scan on Saturday which will make me 7+1.

Oh I see, I assumed EPU already. You absolutely should go to EPU as they will want to scan you two weeks apart themselves to be sure of what’s what. But (and there’s truth in this) they’re also far more reliable for early scanning than private scans. Certainly the only private scan I had (12 weeks) the resolution was way fuzzier than my epu one two days before. The sonographer was an nhs worker but the machinery was not… so if the same blurry imaging machine was used to detect something tiny tiny, there is more scope for error…

I’m so sorry @am316that you are going through this. There are always examples of people who have had different experiences and been ok but obviously it is more reassuring to have everything measuring on track. I’m glad you’ve been able to book another scan for Saturday. Clinics like to wait 2 weeks to give a clearer result but that doesn’t always take into account the feelings of the couple and levels of anxiety.

Have you been referred to a recurrent miscarriage clinic? After 3 losses the NHS should refer you so ask if it hasn’t happened.

am316 · 19/02/2026 08:34

Thank you everyone for replying ❤️ yes the first scan yesterday was at an EPU at my local hospital. They have booked me in for another scan but it's not until March and I don't feel I can wait that long. That's why I was thinking to go to a walk in EPU at a different hospital on Saturday. Hoping that a few more days will give me some more conclusive answers.

I was referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic yeh after the first three miscarriages. But honestly it was so pointless, I had one appointment where they took history and did some blood tests and a scan and just said there was no reason for them, keep trying and it will likely be fine.

Just updating, had scan this morning and they could see a possible tiny fetal pole 1.4mm, no heartbeat. Given that I'm now 7+0 the sonographer said it's highly unlikely to be viable. More waiting...it's torture. Anyone been in this situation before know what's the earliest I can start management? They're still saying inconclusive even though it seems pretty conclusive to me 😞

I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this OP.

I think you will need to wait until they can conclusively confirm either way. For me, they needed a second person to confirm the MMC, so I think it’s to eliminate any possibility of error.

I’ve experienced two miscarriages, one at 12 weeks and a MMC at 8 weeks, and I understand how devastating they are. Sending you lots of strength and positivity.

Can I ask, have you ever been prescribed progesterone? If not, please ask if you can be prescribed it if you do experience another miscarriage. I was also advised by a lovely midwife to start 75mg of aspirin daily after my second miscarriage. I took this alongside the progesterone for my third and successful pregnancy. I honestly think my baby would not be here without them. I really hope they can make a difference for you in future if this pregnancy doesn’t work out ♥️

I took aspirin in 2 of my pregnancy's and they were the only ones that survived, definetly would recommend taking it

Hi, I went to EPU over the weekend as I had some light bleeding (no other symptoms) so they did an internal ultrasound and there was a sack measuring 6 weeks and 3 days so couldn't for certain say everything was ok and need to have another scan after a week. They noted a sub-chorionic haematoma and said they usually resolve themselves. I'm just worried because today there has been more blood and period like cramps, can this just be from having the internal ultrasound?

RockLobsterRockLobster · 24/02/2026 12:41

@Ljm348
the cramps could be from the internal scan. Cramps are normal at this stage of pregnancy too, but just keep and eye on the bleeding, and just go back to the EPU if you feel like it’s becoming heavier and you’re worried.
Try to relax as much as possible, although I know that’s hard to do when you’re worried.

Did they see a fetal pole etc or just the sac? How far along do you think you are? Do you agree with the 6 weeks 3 days estimation?
