Am a bit clueless - this is my first, I'm about 3 weeks gone and have made an appointment at the docs for next Monday evening (nothing available earlier!). Is there anything I should do in the meantime? Do I need to bring a wee sample to the docs? Didn't ask as was phoning from work and didn't want to be overheard!!

Thanks all

3 weeks? 3 weeks since first day of last period or 3 weeks late?

scorpio1 · 16/06/2008 09:38

take folic acid (get from Boots) daily. the doctor will just ask you about the dates of your last period and will refer you to a MW. They normally don't re-test.

As no-one lese has said it so far - CONGRATULATIONS!!!

wasabipeanut · 16/06/2008 09:40

I'm afraid babyignoramus that tyou just wait! All your gp will do is the same test that you'd do at home so really you may not even want to bother.

The next step is a booking in appt with a midwife and the doctor can tell you when you need to make that - varies with each health authority I think.

Congratulations!!

Take a wee sample as it'll save time.
Get sme folic acid and start taking it.
Eat well.

Theres not much more you can do really.
You probably wont get your first MW appointment after 8 weeks, then you'll have your scan at 12 weeks.

wasabipeanut · 16/06/2008 09:41

Oooh yes I forgot the folic acid - v important. If you can stretch to it Pregnacare is a great all round pregnancy vitamin amd their fish oils supplement can help your joints when you start to get really hooooge!

LittleMissNorty · 16/06/2008 09:41

Congratulations

there is no rush.....in my area you do not need to see GP, just pick up a midwife pack from the receptionist....mw usually contacts you and books you in when you're about 8-10 weeks and then you'll be in the system so to speak.

Come over and join us in the Due in Feb thread....there are lots of others all in the same situation and lots of advice

youknownothingofthecrunch · 16/06/2008 09:42

Welcome to a whole lot more cluelessnesses (it's a word, honest), we all just make it up as we go along.

Congratulations!

Get the folic acid supplements and maybe buy a book on pregnancy so you know what to expect.

I'm sure someone can recommend a book?

scorpio1 · 16/06/2008 09:42

i did mean congrats too

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 16/06/2008 09:48

Congrats! It feels like everything should suddely jump into motion when you find out you are preg, but actually you don't need to see a GP until 7 or 8 weeks and they will give you a midwife's number to call, get your NHS number and make an appt for 10 weeks. (remember the weeks start from last period, not conception)
the GP probably won't even test your wee or do a preg test. They prefer not to see people so early in preg generally as it's such early days, but don't worry about it!
xx

Thank you all.

It's almost 4 weeks since LMP, (I have short cycles, hence finding out quite early).

I am taking folic acid and have got a copy of 'what to expect' today.

Didn't know about the midwife pack things, will pop into the doc's on the way home and see if that is the case here as well (it's a busy area so I suspect it might be the case that we don't see the GP).

NB have done 3 tests, all positive so I'm guessing they really won't need to test again!!!

Thanks again, will see you on the due in Feb thread I think (thanks for link)
