Blood pressure high at hospital but low at home

Had a bit of a nightmare day! 36 weeks, BP measured 117/90 initially (midwife kept talking to me so I was stupidly talking) and then the monitor kept breaking and when it was being redone it was showing insanely high numbers, midwife tried again with another monitor and it was 140/90 but at this point I was so incredibly stressed out.

Sent to triage, I was absolutely stressed and could feel the adrenaline in me. Lower number was consistently <90 but higher number was 133-144, they were happy with my last reading of 133/85. Baby passed CTG with flying colours, my wee was clear (twice).

I bought a fairly decent well reviewed blood pressure monitor on the way home and all my results have been great this evening all <120/80, my partner’s BP has been higher than mine so I know it’s not a totally dud machine.

Can I take these at home measurements as having any value whatsoever? The hospital didn’t seem too concerned to be honest but it’s stressed me out a lot!

Many of us have high blood pressure when in a healthcare environment yet it’s low or normal at home. I used to have my BP taken twice a year in a hospital as part of a health condition monitoring and it was always high yet normal at home. I’ve agreed with the consultant to monitor it myself at home and submit the readings at each appointment. This is also part of monitoring guidelines.

I have white coat, where in a healthcare setting my bp is sky high, but fine at home. Its always been this way my whole life.

It’s a bit of a nightmare when pregnant, and as a result it’s in my notes that I had possible high bp in my last pregnancy (I didn’t have a machine at home at the time).

so this pregnancy I’ve taken readings at home a couple of times a week throughout, just so I know what’s normal for me, and I can be confident everything is ok. Because I can’t trust the readings I get at midwife appointments etc.

My midwife still sends me in for monitoring as she says she can’t go off my readings, but I find it still helps me to do myself for my own piece of mind!

I have the exact same thing, I'm 36 weeks too. It's been going on for weeks, always high at midwife/ consultant appointment but pretty low at home. They wanted to put me on meds for it but I refused as it's so low at home. I think it's a mix of white coat syndrome and being a bit more out of breath after walking to the appointment! I wouldn't worry, especially if your urine is clear x
