what baby bath + breast pump should I buy?

Going on a mega shopping expedition this week. First pg and a bit bamboozled by all the different types of baby baths and brands of breast pumps (manual). Was thinking of buying the Mothercare fits over the bath type to save my back and the Avent manual breast pump. Anybody used these products or have better options. Thanks any advice most appreciated. x

I had the tommy tippee manual breast pump and it did the job and came with a microwave serilizer which was sooo useful. When we went on holiday I used a washing up bowl to bath dd and it was so much easier than the baby bath I wish I hadn't bothered buying one at all. The fact it was small and high up made it perfect

In my (not-so-vast) experience with my 5 month old DS, he was in a baby bath for a very little amount of time before he was getting too big for it. I have bathed him in the bath (with no baths/aids) for a few months now. Before that I borrowed a baby bath for a few weeks. I would put a wanted message on freecycle to see if you can get a baby bath, as you'll use it for such little time, you will regret paying much for it! I have a tommee tippee manual breast pump (was £12.49 in Tesco for some time, I don't know whether it still is) and it's really good, quite efficient, easy to use and clean, and pretty quiet.

the cheapest bath you can find
and the avent hand pump

imo

ExtraFancy · 15/06/2008 14:31

I loved the Avent manual breast pump. We only used a baby bath for a few weeks, then he went into the big bath (with a non-slip bath mat).

The tommee tipee closer to nature breast pump was the best for me, didn't get on with avent one. But everyone is different.
Baby bath was borrowed from a friend but would now use a bath support in big bath or something higher up to save your back!

MrsBadger · 15/06/2008 14:58

either one of these in the big bath or, if you have trouble bending, a washingup bowl on the kitchen counter.

I had the tommy tippee pump too, purely because it was the cheapest and came with the least extraneous crap.

Wouldn't bother with a baby bath, we used bathroom basin or baby had a quick dip on my lap when I had one. There is a myth that babies must have a bath every night for bedtime routine - it's not really very good for their skin, let alone immune system or having any flexibility in your evenings.
Can't advise on breastpumps, am in same boat on that issue. Saw some at carboot sale this morning far cheaper than Ebay, so I may buy an electric one after all some time.

Seashell71 · 15/06/2008 15:14

An electric pump is the way to go imo,but it depends how often you're going to express. Anyway you don't have to buy one just yet, wait and see.
Avoid a baby-bath, they're so bulky! I've used a bath support, then a bath seat for fun, then nothing from 8 months.

Sidge · 15/06/2008 15:22

Don't bother with a baby bath. Waste of time and money!

I've had 3 children and bathed them all in the normal bath, using one of these when they were tiny, or putting them in with DH.

I had an Avent breast pump and found it just fine for occasional expressing.

Buckets · 15/06/2008 15:32

You don't even need anyone to help, you just lay out their towel on the floor before you get in. After you get out wrap them up cosy and safe in it while you dry yourself next to them. Have done it in world's smallest bathroom!

Pannacotta · 15/06/2008 15:49

We also used a fabric support for both DSs in the main bath.
Am sure you could get one of these for free/next to nothing if you place a wanted ad here on MN.
I had an Avent breast pump which was fine.

popsycal · 15/06/2008 16:46

just to add about the aevtn breast pump - I had both a manual avent and an electric medela and used to express ALOT (expressed at work and each evening). I found the manual one more effecive but I think it is different for different people

halogen · 15/06/2008 17:48

Those fabric bath supports are absolutely great. Also second the Avent breast pump.

quickerthistimeplease · 15/06/2008 21:21

My best baby purchase was definately thisand my DD absolutely loved it.
Made bathtimes much less stressful. My mother said she'd wished she's had one when we were little and recommends it to all her Granny friends!

barey · 15/06/2008 21:26

Can't recommend the Medela Swing pump highgly enough - it was the best money I spent. Bought it in hospital when had DD and it had so much use. Had Avent manual pump for DS and there is no comparison.

karney · 16/06/2008 13:37

Thanks everyone, Think I'll change my baby bath tactic and go for a bath support instead. breast pump advice has helped make mind up too, xxxx
