Hello,

I have come down with what seems a chest infection. Currently waiting for a call back from GP, so hoping it will get sorted asap.
I’m almost 34 weeks pregnant in a high risk of pre term labour pregnancy. I will be having a scheduled c-section. My next consultant appointment is next week. I’m spiralling a little about a) going in to pre term labour b) what happens if I’m still unwell/coughing if I need either an emergency or the scheduled c-section?
has anyone been in a similar situation? Did you need to have a GA rather than staying awake?
im hoping I have time to recover as would really like to keep this baby in until at least 36 weeks!

anaesthetist pov... ordinarily we'd try and avoid doing a GA in someone with a chest infection. If the section becomes necessary while you're unwell then it'd be a decision for the anaesthetist on the day based on how unwell you are/the urgency of the section/any other medical problems. Hope you feel better soon.

I was unwell with a terrible cough when I had my emergency c-section. They just gave me a spinal block and got on with it, no discussion about needing to go under GA.

The hardest bit for me was actually during recovery, having to cough a lot when I was freshly stitched up. Midwives eventually recommended pushing a cushion into my tummy while I coughed to protect my stitches, which helped with the discomfort a bit. Scar healed perfectly fine though. Hopefully you'll be well on the mend before your LO arrives!

Thank you. Really appreciate the knowledge here! Hopefully I’ve got plenty of time left for things to settle. But good to have an idea of what preferred protocol might be in the worst case scenario x

Hi I have just recovered from a really nasty chest infection, it lasted 2 weeks and I'm now 35 weeks. I'm also high risk and having a c section at 38 weeks so was worried like you. Have you been to GP? I went quite early on as it was hurting so bad to cough so they gave me antibiotics which I think helped me recover quicker. Definitely try get some antibiotics and hopefully you'll be all better by the time of your c section!
