Fibroids in pregnancy

Hi, I wondered if anyone had any (ideally positive) experience of fibroids during pregnancy as it’s making me quite anxious.

I had my 20 week scan today and thankfully everything was fine with the baby. At my 12 week scan the technician pointed out 2 fibrosis, assuming I knew I had them. It was complete news to me as I’ve always had really easy periods and nothing bad pain wise etc. They told me it wasn’t anything to worry about and that they would be checked as I go along. Today they found another one and the 2 originals had grown a bit. They were still very reassuring but did say I would probably be consultant led due to them.

This has worried me a bit, has anyone else has a similar experience? If so, was it okay in the end? Did you end up having to have any treatment?

Well, first off, Google says about 30-40% of women under the age of 40 have fibroids. So you are not at all unusual!

Pregnant wise, it all depends on the type, location, and size.
Small ones create fewer problems than big ones.
Intramural/subserosal create fewer problems than submucosal.
Higher in the uterus is less concerning than if they might block the cervix.

They might cause discomfort (and very very rarely extreme pain), and if they are near the cervix they might make you need a c section. But it is rare for them to cause major issues.

It all depends where it is. Don’t worry yourself until it becomes a problem. I had multiple in my first pregnancy and they are like large grapefruit plus 2x oranges plus a few smaller ones. No complications in the end, delivered naturally. I had a brilliant consultant, as one of them was obstruct the birth canal at the beginning and I saw someone privately too and she was experienced and was not convinced it would moved but my nhs consultant just said let’s see at your 36 weeks scan and it moved! So in the end all natural, very quick labour. I had my second pregnancy and similar story, no issues. And now I’m on my third and most of my fibroids have vanished on its own. Some consultants couldn’t believe it but they do go away. One thing I found useful which I read is I stopped having soya, or significantly reduced my soya intake. Apparently it boosts estrogen and could encourage growth. Anyway, I hope everything goes well. Most of the time those fibroids are fine and don’t cause trouble. Good luck!

I was told at my 20 week scan I had a 4.5cm fibroid I didn’t know I had. The sonographer wasn’t concerned and mentioned position wise it was up out of the way of the cervix and just to let them know if I had any sharp pain later on in the pregnancy as baby grew. I’m 39 weeks today and have my c section booked tomorrow and it hasn’t caused any issues at all. I just have to mention to my consultants tomorrow I have one and they will likely scan me before they go in and check position. My baby has been frank breach since 20 weeks though, no idea if linked- probably not! X
